Ford revealed today the all-new Focus Electric at 2011 CES, and announced that it will launch the new car in North America and Europe by 2013. The Focus Electric is powered by a 100-kilowatt electric motor with a 23-kWh battery, delivering 123 horsepower and 181 pound-feet of torque.
According to the manufacturer, the all-electric powertrain and single-speed transmission provide immediate responsiveness and can push the vehicle to a top speed of 84 mph (136 km/h).
The good news is that the car can be fully charged in three to four hours at home with the 240-volt charge station, which means half od the charge time of its main competitor, the Nissan Leaf.
The advanced lithium-ion battery system used by the car were engineered by Ford in cooperation with supplier LG Chem, and use heated and cooled liquid to help maximize battery life and fuel-free driving range.
Despite the fact that it is an electric car, the new Focus still offers lots of standard safety and security features such as six airbags and electronic traction control, hands-free SYNC telephone connectivity and MyKey for North America.
Moreover, the car also offers unique execution of MyFord Touch driver connect technology, 15-spoke 17-inch aluminum wheels, a 60/40 split rear bench seat, push button start, AM/FM/CD/MP3 Sony Audio with nine speakers, Sirius Satellite Radio with Travel Link, HD Radio and voice-activated Navigation System.
Also, the materials used when building the car are eco-friendly, as Ford used bio-foam seat cushions and recycled fabrics also are featured in the vehicle.
Off-board, Focus Electric owners in North America will be able to maintain constant contact with the car anywhere they have mobile phone access using the Ford-developed MyFord Mobile app.
While it is powered electrically, the new Ford Focus Electric has managed to retain the steering, handling and braking attributes of its conventionally powered Focus siblings. Moreover, since it features no gasoline or diesel engine and boasts of superb aerodynamics, it treats occupants to a quiet yet comfortable in-car experience.
Sherif Marakby, director of Ford's electrification programs and engineering, remarked that the Ford Focus Electric still features dynamics and quality of driving a conventional car and is loaded with many premium components and features found on its gasoline-powered sibling – all while offering remarkable efficiencies and thrilling driving experience.
As standard, the new Ford Focus Electric is offered with six airbags and electronic traction control as well as with hands-free SYNC telephone connectivity and MyKey for North America. It is also laden with eco-friendly materials like bio-foam seat cushions and recycled fabrics.
Moreover, the new Ford Focus Electric for North America features a version of MyFord Touch driver connect technology, push button start and voice-activated Navigation System as well as AM/FM/CD/MP3 Sony Audio with nine speakers, HD Radio and Sirius Satellite Radio with Travel Link, and 60/40 split rear bench seat.
