2012 Geneva: BMW Concept M135i merges M power with 1 Series looks

Article by Anita Panait, on March 7, 2012

The BMW Concept M135i effectively combines the dynamic and sporty design of the new BMW 1 Series and the power of a BMW M Performance automobile.  The BMW Concept M135i features a body design that carries the sporty looks of the new BMW 1 Series to a three-door compact model, and the unique litheness that could only be experienced with a BMW M Performance automobile.

Yes, BMW aims to bring the characteristics of BMW M Performance automobiles into another vehicle segment by merging them with the sporty looks of compact three-door car. The BMW Concept M135i is the result of decades of expertise and experience gained by the BMW M division from motor racing.

The concept underlines the ability of the BMW M division to achieve supreme performance by combining powerful engines, the painstakingly modified suspension technology, and wonderful aerodynamic characteristics. This amalgamation results in the BMW M Performance automobiles having increased agility, controllable handling qualities and an emotional design.

All these M Performance qualities and characteristics are found in the BMW Concept M135i. The BMW Concept M135i is powered by a straight six-cylinder petrol engine that features M Performance Twin Power Turbo technology, allowing the power plant to provide a power output of over 300 hp. This power output gives the BMW Concept M135i an ideal driving performance in the premium compact segment.

When this amount of power is used in conjunction with the rear-wheel drive concept, one could have a one-of-a-kind experience only associated with BMW cars. BMW M Performance automobiles offer precise handling, thanks to a model-specific suspension technology that includes an M sports braking system. The BMW Concept M135i features a set of 18-inch M light alloy wheels that have a double spoke design.

To allow the new BMW M135i to further bring out the potential of its already powerful engine, the vehicle is provided with model-specific suspension. This suspension works with elasto-kinematics of the front axle and the car’s damping systems to offer a sporty drive typical of BMW M Performance vehicles. The car’s engine, suspension and aerodynamic balance as well as its own Variable Sports Steering system work together to ensure that the BMW M135i could offer precise control, superb handling and terrific agility anytime the driver wants. These are complemented by standard 18-inch M light alloy wheels with sizes 225/40 R18 on the front axle and 245/35 R18 on the rear – all wrapped in high grip tires.

To promptly decelerate and stop the new BMW M135i, it is fitted with a fixed caliper M Sport Brake System – from BMW M Performance – that includes four-piston units on the front, two-piston units at the rear, oversized brake discs and dark blue metallic calipers with the M logo. Customers may also avail of the optional M Sport Brake System along with the optional M Sport Package.

On the other hand, the new BMW M135i is fitted with the Driving Stability Control (DSC) package that includes an array of features like the anti-lock braking system (ABS), the Cornering Brake Control system (CBC), and the Dynamic Brake Control system (DBC) and Dynamic Traction Control system (DTC). These are further supported by more features like the Brake Assistant, Dry Braking functionality, Fading Compensation and a Hill Start Assistant. When the new BMW M135i is placed in DTC mode, the response thresholds of the DSC system are set at a higher level.
