After we saw the 2012 Jaguar XF/XFR Facelift, it is time to take a look at the 2012 Jaguar XK/XKR Facelift an updated version of the popular cat that was introduced today at the 2011 New York Auto Show. The first visual impact with the car shows a new set of headlamps featuring LED daytime running lights, as well as a larger grille and a new bumper design.
The chrome mesh grilles were replaced with a matt black detailing on the XK and XKR while the XKR-S receives a unique front bumper underlining its sense of purpose.
The rear of the car shows a revised boot lid, new taillights featuring LED technology and a centered Jaguar logo. The 2012 model year XK/XKR comes with five new colours (a total of 17 paint colours will be offered) as well as with a choice of 11 different designs for the wheels from 18 to 20 inches.
The Black Pack is also available as an option and replaces exterior chrome with a matt black finish, complemented by 20-inch gloss black alloy wheels.
The XKR fitted with the Black Pack also receives body-coloured aerodynamic enhancements and optional side graphics. Under the hood, we find the 5.0-litre AJ-V8 engine delivering 385 PS in the XK, 510 PS in the XKR and 550 PS in the XKR-S. Inside the new XK range the interior has been given a freshen up with new trim finishes and, for the first time, the option of sculpted leather sports seats.
Generally, the Adaptive Dynamics has three main functions which are to control the vertical movement of the body, pitch rate, and roll rate. The Adaptive Dynamics manages to analyze thousands of variables and inputs at almost a hundred times per second in order to determine the handling and ride characteristics. Since it also monitors the position of the wheel at about 500 times a second, it is able to attain the well-known Jaguar duality as it relates to sporting appeal and comfort.
If there is a need to change any of these characteristics, all that is needed is to activate the Dynamic Mode which helps reduce the gearshift times, sharpen the response of the throttle, and increase the body control. The XK has two supercharged version, both of which get advantage from having the Active Differential Control technology by Jaguar.
What this technology does is to utilize a multiplate clutch, then to vector torque, and to the driven wheel that offers the most grip. With the stability control and ABS, the technology ensures that there is precision and traction when driving at mid-corner and even at exiting. Since the non-supercharged models utilize a mechanical differential, stability under power and even outstanding levels of grip are ensured. All models that have the Dynamic Stability Control system offer the choice of four modes, which are normal, TracDSC, DSC Off, and Winter.
All of these give any passionate driver the ability to select the amount of intervention needed for a particular road condition. For the XKR-S model, its electronic systems have been improved as well as the essential stiffness of the aluminum lightweight architecture.
This results to having the most exciting and dynamic Jaguar ever. For the new model, the double wishbone suspension on the front has been completely revised and now has a fully-machined steering knuckle. This helps increase the castor and camber stiffness by as much as 0.13 degrees/kilonewton and change the weighting and accuracy of its steering which raises it to new heights of precision, feedback, and connection.
Even the suspension geometry in the rear has been enhanced as well in order to optimize the rear wheel steer and give it maximum agility. Meanwhile the spring rates at both ends of the vehicle have been increased by 28%. Since the vehicle is capable of running at high speeds, its Active Differential has been programmed in order to lower the steering sensitivity and thus increase the driver control and stability.
A bespoke software specifically for the brand’s Adaptive Damping was made for the XKR-S, giving it maximum grip, optimum traction, and total body control. Changes were made to the TracDSC mode which helps change the level of intervention and ensures that any experienced driver will able to explore even the outer edges of its performance envelope. Meanwhile the exhaust rewards with a sound clearly inspired from motorsport and even has an active pneumatic valve. The suspension changes and Performance exhaust system are available as part of the Dynamic Pack option for the Jaguar XKR model.
