2012 Mercedes-Benz B-Class: official interior photos released

Article by Christian A., on July 28, 2011

Mercedes-Benz has released new details about the upcoming B-Klasse model that is set to make its global debut at the Frankfurt Auto Show this September. Its interior was based on the latest findings by Daimler AG’s Customer Research Center (CRC) in the area of perceptual psychology.

The dashboard features a big three-dimensional decorative element. It is offered with four variants that range from modern to sporty and classic.

In addition, Mercedes claims that the dashboard could be covered with stitched ARTICO man-made leather. At the center of the dashboard, there are three large circular vents that have sporty grilles.

A high quality screen, offered in two sizes, can be seen above the vents. It features an ornamental frame with galvanized surface that contrasts with the piano black of the front panel.

The model’s sporty image is given a boost with the following elements: the new three-spoke steering wheel, an insert in the centre spoke that is finished in silver chrome, an instrument cluster with four round, analogue displays, hanging needles in the 6 o’clock position, and seats with contrasting stitching.

The new B-Klasse model will arrive in European markets about two months after its debut.

The goal of the new Mercedes-Benz B-Class is to be dynamic and this is highlighted through its new concept. Even as its overall height is lower, it continues to offer generous space inside.

Compared to the previous version, the new model is lower by 50 mm as height is now at 1,557 mm. With respect to the highway, the height of the seat has been lowered by 86 mm, making boarding easier while remaining to have a good overview of the contours present in the vehicle. As requested by a number of customers, the company made sure that the sitting position is now more upright. Headroom was enhanced with the front part, the version that does not have the sliding roof, having maximum headroom at 1,047 mm. This makes the B-Class one of the vehicles in its class to offer the best space.

With a sitting position that is not only more erect but even ergonomic and mixing this with the floor of the rear being lower, it leads to total legroom at 976 mm. This amount of space means that it is indeed the best in its class as it is even better compared to the E-Class and the S-Class. In addition to the space, the Mercedes-Benz B-Class also leads its segment in terms of drag coefficient as cd is at 0.26. While the exterior has been designed to be aerodynamic, different parts have been optimized as well.

Air flow that goes around the front wheels are better while the design of the underbody and the cooling air flow help with the vehicle’s aerodynamic performance. The company also included other advanced details like its very own serrated wheel arch spoiler, the patent to which remains pending.

The company intends to eventually offer for the Mercedes-Benz B-Class the ECO Technology package, as an option. With this package installed, it allows this new B-Class to deliver aerodynamics that is the same as the E-Class Coupe. Actual figures show that drag coefficient is cd = 0.24, an excellent figure for a vehicle that has a station wagon rear end. Indeed, the B-Class has the qualities that one would expect of a sports tourer coming from Mercedes.

The dynamic performance and the amount of space are the same as those of a hatchback saloon with the design of the exterior containing characteristic lines to symbolize these two features. Both the front and the rear carry a design that highlights the width. These include the wide grille that is more noticeable with the headlamps going through the sides at the front. For the rear portion, the window is wider. Then there are the two-piece tail lights that come with the horizontally offset meander with a large tailgate that has a low loading sill.

The side line also exhibits the excellent aerodynamics and sportiness of this new model. While the roofline line goes down smoothly to the strong roof spoiler, its bonnet moves effortlessly to the A-pillar. Giving the vehicle a longer look is the roof that has a swage line. Though the wheel arches are more prominent, this is balanced by the dynamic feature lines that are below the beltline. These two provide an athletic interpretation of the company’s present design line.

Meanwhile, the lower edge of its body has the side skirts which provide a light touch to its look. There are other details that have been enhanced like the headlights that have been beautifully designed. These same headlamps have a new spotlight element which more than proves the unique premium credentials of the company for the compact segment.
