2012 Mercedes-Benz M-Class: first vehicle in its class to obtain the environmental certificate

Article by Christian Andrei, on November 21, 2011

A special award was given to the new M-Class from Mercedes-Benz, coinciding with its Nov. 19 market launch. The premium SUV is the first in its class to receive the environmental certificate in accordance with ISO standard TR 14062. The independent examiners of the German TÜV Süd saw the company’s commitment to comprehensive environmental protection, an element that’s at the center of the operating guidelines for the entire Daimler Group.

The company also considers the impact that a vehicle has on the environment during its entire life cycle, starting with development, its production process, its operations, and ending with its disposal.

This environmental certificate is based on an in-depth Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) for the M-Class. The certificate is based on the ISO standard TR 14062 and is valid for all models of the M-Class.

It computed factors like energy requirements and emissions on a distance of 250,000 kilometres, using the Mercedes-Benz ML 250 BlueTEC 4MATIC as an example.

Due to its efficiency, this SUV became the leader in its market segment. It uses up just 6.0 litres of diesel per 100 kilometres (158 g CO2/km). By using the innovative SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) exhaust gas technology with AdBlue injection, it already meets the EU6 guidelines that are expected to take effect in 2014.

The third generation Mercedes-Benz M-Class raises the standards for SUVs with its cutting-edge automotive technology. The new M-Class models give you the best energy efficiency, leading benchmarks for passive safety, and utmost comfort mixed with outstanding driving dynamics. You also get a completely redesigned interior that features ergonomic elements.

The superb fuel efficiency and low emissions are awesome with an average of 25 percent fuel savings for the entire line, as compared to the previous M-Class. This is the highest level of fuel efficiency for the German automaker’s SUVs. The engine line-up is also very modern with the leading drag coefficient of 0.32, new development tools including the "energy-transparent vehicle" and the use of BlueEFFICIENCY measures. All of these help make the new M-Class very energy efficient.

For instance, the ML 250 BlueTEC 4MATIC gives you 28 percent more savings than its previous model and uses only 6 liters of gasoline for every 100 km as measured on the NEDC driving cycle. It emits 158 grams of carbon dioxide per kilometer and can go for 1500 kilometres on a single full tank.

New M-Class also follows the automaker’s brand philosophy. It is the perfect example of the Mercedes-Benz Real Life Safety concept that anticipates real accident situations. As such, you have the front and rear deformation zones and a very strong passenger cell, making the M-Class very safe in the event of an accident. These active and driver-fitness safety mechanisms are further enhanced by a variety of assistance systems that you find in the E-Class and S-Class.

The new Mercedes-Benz M-Class models give you dynamic handling and excellent comfort, whether you are on or off the road. Aside from the steel suspension that features selective damping, the new M-Class also has dynamic handling control systems and new chassis developments available. Both of these are designed to make driving more effortless.

Check out the AIRMATIC air suspension that comes with the Adaptive Damping System, and the ACTIVE CURVE SYSTEM that manages roll stabilisation, as well as the ON&OFFROAD package that offers half a dozen driving modes. You can also buy a wider range of measures that help ensure segment-leading vibration and acoustic comfort with the M-Class.
