2012 Peugeot 208 earns 5 stars at the Euro NCAP crash test

Article by Christian Andrei, on May 24, 2012

Independent organisation Euro NCAP has revised its criteria, making it more difficult to get high star ratings. However, Peugeot 208 is just built so well that it took the highest rating possible for a newly introduced level of award. The 208 is the first car in its segment to earn 5 stars. What Project 208 aimed to build was a compact car that’s comfortable, economic and with impressive road handling.

The 208 appears smaller on the outside but is actually bigger on the inside, making it practical for daily usage, specifically in an urban setting. It also offers more comfort. Its new architecture reflects an additional advantage.

The weight of the 208 is 110kg lower on average than the 207. This means that it produces lower CO2 emissions as well as offers outstanding fuel consumption. Because of the reduced weight, the running costs also drop. Even the safety performance of the car is improved by the decreased weight. Each kilogram that is dropped results to a reduction in energy to displace.

The 208’s Access trim entry level model has the following high level of equipment as standard: ABS, ESP, six airbags, rear Isofix fixings, speed limiter, front seat belt warning, and collapsible steering column.

With its structure, occupant protection is also improved. It features aluminium absorption beam, very high strength steel (VHSS) and ultra-high strength steel (UHSS) panels. The Euro NCAP’s rating proves the high safety protection level of the 208, whether in active or passive situations. Furthermore, driving is made safer due to the re-styled architecture of the driving position.

208 AWARDED 5 STARS BY EURO NCAP

The main aim of Project 208 was to design a car that was compact, comfortable, economic and with good road handling. Bringing all of these criteria together is challenging; however the objective has been achieved! 208 has all of these qualities.

Smaller on the outside, bigger on the inside, the 208 is practical for day to day usage, particularly in an urban environment, while also offering more comfort. Further advantage comes from this new architecture: the 208 is lighter by 110kg on average compared to the 207, which produces lower CO2 results and excellent fuel consumption. Just as the weight reduction has enabled a reduction in running costs, it also has a positive impact on the safety performance of the vehicle. Every kilogramme removed corresponds to a reduction in energy to displace.

This year the independent organisation Euro NCAP has introduced a new level of award which makes it even more challenging to obtain high star ratings.

With this more demanding criteria, the 208 is the first car in its segment to obtain 5 stars, which is the highest rating possible. Starting with the Access trim entry level model, the 208 is equipped as standard with a high level of equipment: ABS, ESP, six airbags, rear Isofix fixings, speed limiter, front seat belt warning, collapsible steering column, and more. Its structure also contributes to occupant protection: aluminium absorption beam, very high strength steel (VHSS) and ultra-high strength steel (UHSS) panels.

This Euro NCAP result is best proof of the 208’s level of safety protection, both in active and passive conditions. In addition, arranged around elements which play an important role in this area, the re-styled architecture of the driving position makes for safer driving.

By bringing eye level information closer, the raised instrument panel minimises the time that the eyes need to leave the road to check information. Linked to the improved weight, the small steering wheel gives better agility and offers the driver a new and improved dynamic driving experience.
