2012 Porsche Cayman to receive reworked versions of its current engines

Porsche's second-generation Cayman was spied while testing at the Nurburgring before its 2012 launch. This small sports car will be offered with slightly reworked versions of the current 2.9 six-cylinder engine (which delivers 280bhp) and 3.4 six-cylinder engine (which produces 330bhp).

There are more differences between the first-gen and second-gen Cayman such as the use of a new electro-mechanical steering system and a stop-start system to improve its fuel economy and lower CO2 emissions.

In the longer term, Porsche intends to give the Cayman a new turbo 2.0 flat four that is meant to be fitted on the 2014 mid-engined sub-Boxster roadster. The next-gen Cayman is set to be launched beside the third-generation Boxster, which will be seen at the Nurburgring for high-speed testing.

New Cayman and Boxster models will have new panels. Even the Boxster's fabric roof gets new panels as well. To make sure that weight is kept to a minimum, its new panels will be lighter.

The cars’ wheelbase and overall length will increase to almost 4.4 metres, offering more passenger and luggage space. These revisions will also make space in the Porsche range for the smaller roadster. The new models will arrive at the same time as the end of Porsche’s contract with Valmet Automotive in Finland, which is where the current Boxster and Cayman are built. The next-gen cars will be produced in Stuttgart.

The 2012 Porsche Cayman makes a pretty fine first impression. The car’s styling takes its cue from the Porsche Boxster, but it has a redesigned front and rear end, while its headlights and tail lights have an awe-inspiring design that is made even more awesome by the progressive lights technology that helps the Cayman capture the dynamic look that fans have fallen in love with. The direction indicators are now a part of the halogen main headlights, which sport a design that reminds you of the Carrera GT’s tube look.

Located near the foglamps, the new LED positioning lights feature the light rod technology. Meanwhile, bi-xenon headlights, which have flowing curve lights, as well as the daytime driving LED lights, are both optional add-ons. And you just might decide on them when you see how they are arranged in a cross design that lends the sports coupe a distinguishable light profile.

More specifically, the rear end of the car has a new design that incorporates the likewise newly designed rear lights. The rear lights now feature red LED lamps and tapers out sharply towards the outside highlighting the elegance of the rear end.

The Sports Chrono Package and the Start-Off Assistant

All the cars in the Porsche Cayman line come with the Start-Off Assistant, which makes it easier for the driver to operate the car under normal driving conditions and which prevents the car from rolling when moving off on a gradient. The new feature automatically holds the brakes and gradually eases up on it when the driver steps off the brake pedal. The result? The set off is smooth even without having to bother with the handbrake.

You can also add the Porsche's Sports Chrono Package or that Sports Chrono Package Plus, which has the PCM Porsche Communication Management and the Launch Control function if you have the PDK.

If you have the Porsche Cayman equipped with PDK, the Launch Control feature allows you to go from 0 km/h to 100 km/h faster. For instance, it only takes 4.9 seconds for the Porsche Cayman S to accelerate to 100 km/h. That’s 0.2 seconds faster than accelerating without Launch Control.

Sporty and comfortable: A look at the suspension and chassis

Nothing much has been improved in the suspension and chassis of the Porsche Cayman. But it has been reworked to be able to handle the engine’s added power. It is also much more comfortable and the ride is smoother, even with the car’s more dynamic performance.

Buyers of the Porsche Cayman and Cayman S can opt to have the Porsche Active Suspension Management fitted in. The PASM is a damper system that is electronically controlled. It controls the damping force for each wheel using two modes of suspension: Normal and Sport. Normal PASM is for day-to-day driving while Sport is for faster driving on the track.

The PASM is 10 millimeters lower than the standard suspension and employs better suspension management.

The Porsche Cayman comes with the standard 17-inch wheels, with newly redesigned rims. Measuring 7J x 17 for the front rims and 8.5J x 17 for those at the back, these are 0.5 inch wider than the previous Cayman. At the rear, it’s half an inch wider than on the former model. Meanwhile, the Cayman S has the standard 18-inch wheels that also have a new design.

The tires are made of rubber compounds that do not contain polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon. That means you have more environmentally friendly tires.
