2012 Smart fortwo gets upgrades inside and out for April rollout

Article by Anita Panait, on February 1, 2012

Expect the new Smart fortwo to sport a striking new look when the two-seater city car hits the road in spring.  The substantially renovated smart fortwo now dons a more dynamic appearance: larger radiator grille with integrated logo; newly designed front aprons; horizontally arranged LED daytime lights; muscular side skirts and modified rear aprons.

"The way in which the fortwo now displays the smart logo more prominently stands for the brand's new self-confidence," Dr Annette Winkler of smart GmbH said, adding that the city car has long become an icon that is a defining feature of urban traffic throughout the world. The fortwo’s chrome-coloured logo is now located in the black radiator grille. The car’s air inlets under the number plate are combined into a single unit, giving it a bolder appearance. The LED daytime driving lights options are now arranged horizontally.

A buyer could also choose between three new alloy wheels: 1) a new 9-spoke alloy wheel for smart forwto passion; 2) a 3-spoke alloy wheel with wide tires; 3) a 3-twin-spoke alloy wheel also with wide tires.A customer could also select from seven color options, including matt anthracite.

One could also get an optional white smart fortwo BRABUS Xclusive. Aside from the three soft top colors -- red, black and blue --  for the smart cabrio, the smart BRABUS custom-made program is also available in six other soft top colours.

The car’s interior was also blessed with a new look.  The smart fortwo’s interior comes in crystal grey package, which is comprised of a fresh leather/fabric combination for the seats; an imitation leather/fabric mix for the door trims; and black imitation leather for the instrument panel with a grey knee pad.

The car’s pulse and passion variants offer more color options in the equipment lines than the basic pure model. The pulse and passion variants emphasize the frame of the front grille and the rear trim strip in silver. The variants’ front spoiler, side skirts and rear apron are painted in the car's exterior color while the door mirror caps have a tridion color finish.

On the smart pure, the components are black. Smart will offer five lines -- pure, pulse, passion, BRABUS and BRABUS Xclusive. The smart fortwo will be available in coupé and cabrio versions, with six engine variants. Buyers could choose a fortwo electric drive, which features an environment-friendly electric power train; a fuel-efficient micro hybrid petrol engine; or a fuel-efficient cdi turbodiesel. Prices start at €10,275 for the smart fortwo 45 kW mhd pure. Buyers could now order the smart fortwo. Deliveries to dealerships will start in April.
