2013 Mercedes-Benz SL 63 AMG: photo update

Article by Anita Panait, on March 5, 2012

All roads are ready for the launch of the innovative Mercedes-Benz SL 63 AMG in May 2012. Touted as an actual lightweight, the SL 63 AMG is poised to become a heavyweight on its category. Indeed the SL 63 AMG is now 125 kilograms lighter than its previous version due to its all-aluminum body shell similar to that of the SLS AMG super sports car.

Its improvements include the use of the super car’s high-performance power source. The standard SLS 63 AMG is powered by the AMG 5.5-litre V8 'biturbo' (twin-turbocharged) engine that provides 395 kW (537 hp) of output and 800 Nm of torque.  This allows the SLS 63 AMG to accelerate from zero to 100 km/h in 4.3 seconds and to 200 km/h in 12.9 seconds, and to reach a top speed of 250 km/h mph, which is electronically limited.

A customer may choose to get the upgraded option, which features the AMG Performance package. The package significantly boosts the car’s already high output to 415 kW (564 hp) and 900 Nm. This provides SLS 63 AMG with enough power to accelerate from zero to 100 km/h in 4.2 seconds and to reach 200 km/h in 12.6 seconds, and cruise to a top speed of 300 km/h mph, which is also electronically limited. With the AMG Performance package, one could own a car whose power is above all its rivals in the segment.

Both engines have an NEDC combined consumption of 9.9 liters per 100 kilometers for both power outputs, which is full 4.2 liters or 30% lower than the outgoing model. The car’s M 157 engine is an eight-cylinder power plant that features a striking amalgamation of high power output and low fuel consumption, thanks to the spray-guided direct petrol injection technology.

The M 157 engine also features an all-aluminum crankcase, four valves per cylinder with camshaft adjustment, twin turbochargers, alternator management, air/water intercooling, and an ECO start/stop function.

The car’s weight-optimized AMG sports exhaust system with two chromed twin tailpipes produces a unique engine sound. The Mercedes-Benz SL 63 AMG will be available in May 2012 at starting price of €157,675 while the SL 63 AMG "Edition 1” could be acquired for €189,269.50. Those who want to install the AMG Performance package would have to add €14,280 to the price. All prices include 19% VAT.

Even at a glance, it is pretty easy to tell that the new Mercedes-Benz SL63 AMG is a luxurious sporty performer. This is exemplified by its classic sports car proportions, as the SL63 AMG doesn’t only feature a long bonnet and a powerful rear end. It also sports a set-back compact cabin. Of course, distinct AMG body styling elements are found on this luxurious sports car.

For instance, the front end of this vehicle features a front apron with black intakes and large air openings – all from AMG. The sports car’s silver-chrome finished radiator grille is flanked– as standard – by ILS headlamps with very high-quality tubes for the low and main beam. The main headlamp is bordered by a chrome bracket while the LED indicator lamps and curved LED sidelights feature a flared arrangement. Also finished in silver-chrome are parts like the sports car’s lower strut in the front apron, surrounds of its AMG daytime driving lights, the fins on the bonnet and the side fins on the wings.

When viewed from the sides, the SL63 AMG is best defined by the "V8 BITURBO" logos on its profile as well as by titanium grey-painted 5-twin-spoke AMG light-alloy wheels with sizes 9.0 x 19 inches on the front and 10 x 19 on the rear. These rims are wrapped in 255/35 R 19 tires on the front and 285/30 R 19 tires on the rear. On the other hand, the rear end of the SL63 AMG features AMG’s sports exhaust system with two chromed bumper-integrated twin tailpipes. An AMG spoiler lip is also provided, helping reduce aerodynamic lift and making the SL63 more stable when cruising at high speeds.

On the other hand, the SL63 AMG comes with an interior with a wrap-around theme as found in the CLS 63 AMG. In this theme, the upper section of the dashboard seemingly unites with the doors and the parcel shelf of the luxurious sports car. As expected, the cabin of the SL63 AMG offers a lot of passenger room and makes use of high-quality materials crafted in high precision. Furthermore, the interior has minimal gap dimensions.
