2013 Shelby GT500 Super Snake breaks cover

Article by Christian Andrei, on September 20, 2012

Shelby American is offering two new tuning packages for the 2013 Ford Shelby GT500. The coupe and convertible models could get the upgrades. However, the Super Snake packages will be given to only 500 cars. What Shelby American does is give the standard 2013 Ford Shelby GT500 some black or white stripes, either black or silver 20-inch Shelby wheels, a new fiberglass Shelby hood, and a smattering of red embroidered Shelby logos on the headrests and floor mats.

A two-tone leather interior is optional. Among the mechanical improvements are a short-shift kit, new suspension components, a louder Borla exhaust, and Wilwood brakes with six-piston front calipers and cross-drilled brake discs. The factory 2013 Ford Shelby GT500 is already powerful with an output of 662 hp from its supercharged 5.8-liter V-8 engine. Still, it got an upgrade.

Consumers can decide to add a new Whipple or Kenne Bell supercharger, together with improved radiators and cooling parts that raise the power to 850 hp. Shelby American said that this output is incredible but it wants to assure buyers that this vehicle can be legally driven on the streets and that it uses normal gasoline.

The package to get the 662-hp version is available for $28,995 while that of the 850-hp version costs $39,995. Of course, you still have to buy the new 2013 Shelby GT500, which could set the customers back by $54,995 for the coupe and $59,995 for the convertible. Destination charges are included in these prices.

Press Release

Shelby GT500 Super Snake

Shelby American, a wholly owned subsidiary of Carroll Shelby International Inc. (CSBI:PK), is now offering the most powerful versions of the Shelby GT500 Super Snake for the 2013 model year in the company's 50 year history. With a base model rated at 662 HP and an optional 850 HP version, the limited edition 2013 Shelby GT500 Super Snake also features new styling cues, color options and optional performance upgrades at a lower base price. Only 500 total 2013 Super Snakes will be built; the car is available as a coupe or convertible in the entire color palette offered by Ford Motor Company on the Shelby GT500.

"When Ford launched the 2013 Shelby GT500, we were bombarded with requests for Shelby American to offer a Super Snake package for the car," said John Luft, president of Shelby American. "Our team worked closely with Ford Racing and other key partners to develop our new fire breathing snake. The result is the most powerful base model Super Snake ever at 662 horsepower, which is available at prices lower than previous models. By checking off a few boxes in the series of optional equipment, you can take home a street-legal 850 horsepower version that runs on pump gas."
For the 2013 model year, Shelby American takes the stock Ford GT500 and kicks it up to the next performance level with new options and styling changes. Customers can choose between Satin Black or Gloss White stripes to be paired with new wheels in Satin Black or Bright Silver Metallic, along with new silver and blue stripes paired with limited base vehicle colors. Offered for the first time in Shelby American's history will be a choice of rear-only or front and rear "wide body" packages with an optional 14 inch rear wheel and tire package, as seen on the Carroll Shelby Tribute car developed by Ford and Shelby American that was unveiled in Monterey.

The 2013 Shelby GT500 Super Snake will make an appearance at the upcoming Barrett-Jackson collector car auction in Las Vegas, September 27 – 29.
"The Shelby GT500 Super Snake has been the big dog of the Shelby American lineup," added Shelby American Vice President of Production Gary Davis. "With Ford's new 2013 Shelby GT500 having 662 hp right out of the box, along with our new wide body putting 14 inches of rubber on the ground, this car will be a game changer when it comes to power to the pavement performance."

The Shelby GT500 Super Snake is a post-title program based on the Ford Shelby GT500. The 2013 Ford Shelby GT500 Super Snake post title package includes:
• Standard base tune is 662 HP and 631 ft./lbs. of torque
