Volvo announced today that the S60 Polestar will go into limited production, but the bad news is that the first batch will be exclusively built for Australian market. The first cars will be delivered to the customers in late June 2013 and each car will carry a 3.0-liter six-cylinder turbo-charged Volvo T6 engine delivering 350bhp or 257kW and 500+ Nm of torque.
With these numbers, the Volvo S60 Polestar is able to hit 100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.9 seconds and a top speed of 250 km/h or 155 mph. Moreover, the car uses a Polestar-tuned six-speed automatic gearbox, which also features a launch control system and a Polestar-tuned Haldex 4WD system.
Polestar also took care of the engine and installed a new intercooler, a BorgWarner turbo and a full-flow stainless steel exhaust system with 3.5-inch tailpipes.
Still, things don’t stop here and the new S60 Polestar features front and rear stabilizers, rear tie blades, new springs and strut brace with carbon fiber enforcement. In terms of design, the Volvo S60 Polestar comes with a new aerodynamic package, which includes a new front splitter, rear wing and diffuser.
While the Volvo S60 Polestar offers avant-garde technology seen on the racetrack, its confidence comes from the fact that its chassis underwent thousands of kilometers of extensive testing. Tests were done in different weather conditions and road situations.
Development work on the Volvo S60 Polestar even covered the environments in Germany, Sweden and Spain. A good part of the development work for the Volvo S60 Polestar is Robert Dahlgren, a Volvo Polestar Racing driver and a veteran factory racing pilot for the carmaker.
According to Dahlgren, the Volvo S60 Polestar combines the best elements of the Volvo S60 T6 and the S60 Polestar Concept Car. He noted that the Volvo S60 Polestar represents a good combination of the Volvo and Polestar core values -- safety and performance.
Indeed the Volvo S60 Polestar features a number of technologies seen on Polestar racing cars, like Öhlins dampers, an extensively developed, highly tuned chassis, and high capacity brakes. Dahlgren said that the Volvo S60 Polestar is the carmaker’s first step to a production version that will be made available to customers.
