Audi has revealed the pricing and fuel economy figures for the 2014 A8 L TDI sedan. The A8 is one of four Audi models that will get a diesel option for the 2014 model year. The others are the Q5, A6 and A7. When the A8 L TDI arrives at the market in the spring, it will be priced from $83,395 (including destination costs).
This slots the oil-burner below the $88,095 4.0L twin-turbo V8 model but higher than the $79,395 3.0L supercharged V6 variant in the long-wheelbase A8 lineup.
Audi A8 L TDI has a 24/36 city/highway mpg EPA rating, making it much more efficient than any of the gasoline-powered options. In addition, its fuel economy will be better than the rating of the only other diesel full-size luxury sedan offered in the U.S. -- the Mercedes-Benz S350 BlueTEC 4MATIC with a rating of 21/31 mpg.
A8 L TDI attains its excellent mileage via a 3.0-liter turbodiesel V6 that partners with an eight-speed automatic and delivers 240hp and 406 lb-ft of torque. Power is sent to all the four wheels through Audi’s Quattro AWD system. With this setup, the car can accelerate from zero to 60 mph in 6.4 seconds. Audi said that there are presently no plans yet to introduce a normal-wheelbase A8 diesel.
Inside, the new Audi A8 features elegant, airy lines. The cabin is marked by a lean yet low instrument panel as well as a long arc that serves as the wrap-around element. Every passenger could expect ample space for superior comfort and convenience, as backed by several options. For instance, the front seats could be specified with ventilation and massage functions, featuring five programs and intensities.
Both the new Audi A8 and the A8 L could be optionally provided with electrically adjustable, individual rear seats while the A8 L could be specified with a continuous, leather-covered center console. Moreover, the new Audi A8 could be equipped with the luxurious relaxation seat with electrically adjustable footrest.
The new Audi A8 could also be optionally fitted with four-zone deluxe automatic air conditioning, convenience key with power door closing assist and an ionizer that could help improve cabin air quality. Furthermore, the new A8 could be equipped with a panorama glass roof, privacy windows, a cooler as well as folding tables.
Of course, all materials in Audi’s new flagship have been carefully chosen and then crafted to perfection. This is evident in the almost unrecognizable gaps in the two-piece inlays and the LED adjustable ambient lighting. The high quality interior of the new Audi A8 is also evident in the seat covers in premium grades of leather, including the new Unicum leather in nutmeg brown.
