2014 Beijing Motor Show: VW debuts the New Midsize Coupe (NMC) Concept

Article by Christian A., on April 21, 2014

Volkswagen introduced at the 2014 Beijing Motor Show the New Midsize Coupe, a new concept car that previews a rival for the Mercedes-Benz CLA. The upcoming model will be slotted beneath the Passat CC and will be based on the Jetta. The new concept car is described by Volkswagen design boss Klaus Bischoff as an avant-garde protagonist for a new compact saloon class.

As you can see from the photos, the concept car is actually ready for production. The front end features a grille inspired by the one found on the Touareg Facelift, LED headlights and a stylish bumper with interesting design elements. From the side, we see a heavily curved roofline, frameless doors but also a notchback-style rear.

According to Volkswagen, this concept creates a fusion of A and B segments. The rear end comes with a spoiler uniformly integrated into the design, while at the bottom there is a light refracting edge that lowers the visual centre of gravity. Moreover, Volkswagen installed new LED rear lights featuring a 3D design.

The rear bumper is fitted with a high-gloss black diffuser and dual exhaust tailpipes. Under the hood, there is a 2.0-liter turbo petrol engine that generates 220 hp and can push the vehicle from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 6.5 seconds, all the way to a top speed of 244 km/h or 151.6 mph.

Thanks to the 7-speed dual clutch gearbox and a drag coefficient of 0.29, the VW NMC has a fuel consumption of 6.4 l/100 km.

The interior is focused on the driver and fitted with leather sport seats designed in a bright “Silk” colour, trim strips in piano finish look and many components trimmed in Alcantara such as the rooflining and the roof pillars.

Moreover, the multifunction sports steering wheel and the infotainment system, are based on MQB-A (Modular Transverse Matrix A), and as expected they are adapted from the current Golf. The inner and outer surfaces are visually separated by elegant piping in "Dragon Red", which is the body paint colour. [source: VW]
