Last month, Volvo unveiled the all-new XC90 and announced that it will release the XC90 First Edition in order to celebrate the year it was founded. Limited to 1,927 units, the XC90 First Edition was priced at $65,900 and those who wanted to buy one could order it only via digital commerce at volvocars.com. We said could because the XC90 First Edition was sold out in just 47 hours.
That’s right folks, 7 cars were sold every minute as Volvo says that most of the cars were reserved within one our from sales start. Each vehicle featured an Onyx Black exterior and can be easily distinguished thanks to the 8-spoke, 21-inch inscription wheels.
Inside, the XC90 First Edition features a Charcoal leather dashboard and Linear Walnut inlays, as well as nappa leather seats in Amber. As standard, the First Edition comes with a Bowers & Wilkins audio system that features a 1,400 watts Class D amplifier, 19 speakers and the latest sound processing softare.
In the UK, the XC90 First Edition is powered by the new D5 twin turbo diesel engine, developing 225 hp and bolted to an 8-speed automatic transmission. In the US, the model is powered by a turbocharged T6 AWS petrol engine that delivers 316 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque, mated as well to the 8-speed automatic transmission.
While many were shocked by the massive interest generated by the MY2015 Volvo XC90 First Edition, Volvo Car Group’s Senior Vice President for Marketing, Sales and Customer Service Alain Visser, remarked that although they were very pleased, they were not surprised.
He noted that interest in the XC90 surged dramatically after its global debut. Volvo produced just 1,927 XC90 First Edition cars in celebration of the year the car was founded. Sold out in just 47 hours after the order book was opened, the First Edition cars were, for the first time, only available at www.volvocars.com.
Visser disclosed that the first buyers made their orders just milliseconds after the book was opened. He remarked that this quick response confirms XC90’s position as a truly iconic car model. All 1,927 First Edition cars will be fully equipped and will feature distinctly numbered tread plates and a unique badge on the tailgate.
Making the XC90 First Edition unique is the array of in-cabin and safety technologies featured. For instance, the First Edition has a tablet-like touch screen located in the center. Drivers only have to use this button-free touch screen to run a number of car operations as well as to access Internet-based products and services.
Also featured in the XC90 First Edition is a Bowers & Wilkins audio system with a 1,400-Watt Class D amplifier and 19 speakers as well as the latest sound processing software. Likewise, the Volvo XC90 First Edition features a comprehensive standard safety package that includes two world-first safety technologies -- a run-off road protection package and an auto brake at intersection capability.
