Ford Motor Company, Shelby American and Hertz Corp., three well-known names in the auto industry, announced the release of the 2016 Ford Shelby GT-H that will be available for rent at selected U.S. airports. The unveiling of this special edition of the performance-improved 2016 Ford Mustang GT also marks the 50th anniversary of the Shelby GT350-H.
For those who are interested to drive this special edition, know that it can be rented starting on the Memorial Day weekend. It was during the 1960s that the Shelby GT350-H “Rent-A-Racer” program was started.
In honor of this, 140 units of the 2016 Ford Shelby GT-H will be made available for rent and exclusively through the Hertz Adrenaline Collection at several airports across the U.S. Shelby American CEO Joe Conway said that after the 1966 Ford Shelby GT350-H was released, it reached the status of a legend.
Also a Co-CEO of Carroll Shelby International, Conway further said that the same thing happened a decade ago when the 2006 Ford Shelby GT-H was unveiled during the New York Auto Show and achieved the status of a ‘rock star.’ The company worked with Ford Performance, he continued, to ensure that the 2016 Shelby GT-H becomes the most exciting Mustang to have the iconic black and gold livery of Hertz. Fifty years ago, both Carroll Shelby and Hertz saw a great chance to have customers drive the special edition Shelby and experience its high performance.
During this time, it was Ford that supplied the V8 engines and the automatic transmissions to the Mustangs. Shelby meanwhile was responsible for putting in that extra style and performance. Finally it was through Hertz where customers finally had the opportunity to have this unique driving experience through the “Rent-A-Racer” program.
The trio used this very same formula with the start in 2006 of the Ford Shelby GT-H program. As such, the Shelby/Hertz “Rent-A-Racer” has become so well-known that the 1966 and 2006 models are sought-after by many collectors around the world. With the release of the 2016 Ford Shelby GT-H, Ford, Shelby, and Hertz intended to have a repeat of the past especially with the muscular yet classic look coupled with extra performance capabilities.
Ford Performance Parts manager Doug White shared that the goal was to give everyone the opportunity to experience more fun while driving especially with a unique American car. As a result, both Shelby American and Ford Performance not just improved the performance but even refined the handling and enhanced its exhaust sound.
Hertz meanwhile, White continued, put in the Mustang that unique styling. For those who will be able to rent this limited edition model, they will truly enjoy a wonderful driving experience, he concluded. With the offering of the special edition 2016 Ford Shelby GT-H, Hertz once again marks a special car rental milestone in its 98 years of operation with this specialty and high-performing vehicles. It is also a landmark in its Adrenaline Dream Cars and the Prestige collections.
Meanwhile, Hertz Global Holdings executive vice president and chief marketing officer Matt Jauchius revealed that for almost a century, the company has always focused on understanding both the interest and the needs of their customers. The release of the Ford Shelby GT-H 50th anniversary model clearly shows the commitment of the company to offer a personalized and fun rental experience, he added. This has also managed to make the company the premium brand that it is today, Jauchius further added.
For those who get the chance to drive this highly unique vehicle, he continued, they are sure to experience an exhilarating drive. Similar to the previous generations, it is easy to recognize the 2016 Ford Shelby GT-H given the styling improvements that honor its heritage. On the exterior, the Shelby GT-H will come in black with gold racing stripes, a trademark of many Hertz vehicles going as far back as 1920. The dual racing stripes have long been part of Shelby’s "Le Mans" but this time they are combined with rocker stripes that have the "Shelby GT-H" nomenclature.
In addition, while each unit will have the Hertz Edition emblem placed on its front fenders, it will also have the Hertz Shelby GT-H sill plates as well as a numbered badge. The performance exhaust, with its sound that undeniably makes it a Shelby Mustang GT-H, is supplied by Ford Performance.
In order to make sure that all of the horsepower is available, the limited edition model will have the Ford Racing Handling Pack which offers a staggered wheel kit, lowered springs, sway bars, and dampers that have been specially tuned. It will have the aluminum 19-inch wheels with the Michelin tires. In order to fully appreciate the capability of its 5.0-liter V8 engine, the Ford Shelby GT-H is equipped with the distinct vented hood that has been designed by Shelby.
It will also have a rear spoiler and carbon fiber front splitter. Special badges are visible on the front grille, trunk lid and rear faux gas cap. On the interior, the Shelby GT-H logos can be seen on the floor mats, sill plates, and head restraint. The cars will be manufactured at Shelby American’s Las Vegas assembly facility. Since only 140 units will be made for Hertz’s rental fleets across the U.S., it will truly be an exclusive and unique driving experience.
