Orders for the first versions of the 2016 Model Year Audi A8 range can now be taken by the automaker. Priced from £59,585 OTR, these vehicles offer new levels of luxury and a very low CO2 emissions output. The range is available with enhanced TDI engines and a variety of equipment upgrades. Audi has also added a new Sport specification that boasts a look that takes inspiration from the flagship S8.

Orders for the Sport models will start to be received in June. Deliveries will begin this summer in the UK. The newest range is available in either standard or long wheelbase versions.

There are three specification levels that complement the two TDI engines. These are SE, SE Executive and a new Sport option, which is intended for standard wheelbase versions and is the replacement for the Sport Executive trim in the outgoing range. The Sport models get a more distinct look with a new dynamic exterior package that features front and rear treatments that reference the flagship S8.

It also comes with bolder ‘S’ style side skirts and a set of 19-inch alloy wheels in a seven-parallel spoke design. Audi didn’t spare any detail and made sure that all three levels are lavish. Among the breath-taking features are Valcona leather upholstery, a 180-watt audio system, double glazing, as well as the latest in technology such as all-LED headlights, HDD satellite navigation and the fingertip-sensitive MMI Touch infotainment control system.

The SE Executive versions will also be getting the following: the Audi parking system advanced with reversing camera, unlocking and starting without direct key intervention, the advanced key for convenient locking, and powered, hands-free bootlid operation. The new features for the 2016 model range include powered door closure, privacy glass for the rear windows, and comfort front seats with 22-way powered adjustment and memory function.

When it comes to its look, the new Sport models get new 19-inch seven parallel spoke alloy wheels and sophisticated MatrixBeam LED headlights, which utilize banks of LEDs that can be individually turned off to avoid dazzling oncoming and leading traffic while keeping its full beam illumination. The car also gets the following inside it -- a 600-watt Bose sound system upgrade and Mobile Phone Preparation – High with Audi connect.

There’s no question that having in-car internet-based services and giving it the ability to set up a mobile Wi-Fi hotspot satisfy our thirst for entertainment and information. The Long Wheelbase TDI, Long Wheelbase W12 and S8 models all have their own bespoke and equipment lists.

The A8 has always had a reputation for having outstanding agility and controllability due primarily to its lightweight construction, quattro all-wheel-drive and standard four-mode adaptive air suspension.

The A8 4.2 TDI models also feature additional sport differential enabling torque transfer between the rear wheels for more adjustability. All A8 models are easier to drive with options like a firmer sport version of the air suspension as well as a dynamic steering system.

Powertrain

The long wheelbase versions will still be offered with the very efficient petrol-electric hybrid drivetrain and with the 6.3-litre, twelve-cylinder, 500PS W12, which has always been associated with Audi’s luxury saloon model.

Meanwhile, the 4.0-litre TFSI with Cylinder-on-Demand technology will stay with the 520PS S8, which is offered exclusively with the standard wheelbase.

The standard wheelbase versions are powered by a pair of TDI units, which would also be available with the long wheelbase body. The 3.0-litre V6 TDI is slightly more powerful from 258PS to 262PS. Its CO2 emissions level is even lower from 155g/km to 149g/km (in conjunction with 18-inch wheel).

This results to an impressive combined economy figure of 49.6mpg. In addition, the 4.2-litre V8 TDI maintains its exceptional 385PS and 850Nm of torque, allowing the mostly aluminium-bodied saloon to accelerate to 62mph in just 4.7 seconds (standard wheelbase). It does this with the potential for up to 39.2mpg. In this version, the CO2 emissions also drop from 194g/km to 189g/km.
