2017 Chevrolet Bolt EV makes its debut

Article by Christian A., on January 10, 2016

Chevrolet’s designers dreamed of creating a magnificent electric vehicle that surpasses all boundaries and challenges the normal expectations from an electric automobile. That’s how the 2017 Chevrolet Bolt EV – its first ground-up, long range electric vehicle – came to be.

Chevrolet wanted to give its EV a complete design makeover. Stuart Norris, MD of Design, said that the design team overcame the task by creating a progressive design for its global customers that emphasized exceptional graphics and that boasted a larger passenger space. The 2017 Bolt EV has been styled with unique proportions and is powered by a flat battery package that lies below the interior floor.

The car has a solid stance with a 102.4 inch wheelbase and a wide track, depicting a small crossover. It utilises advanced next generation technology that generates tremendous driving power from a short front overhang. The designers have successfully drawn a progressive profile on the exterior, evident in the large windows, steep windshield and plunging beltline. They also developed a spacious interior that has an airy and well-lit feel.

From the passengers’ upright SUV-inspired seats, they can enjoy a panoramic view through the large greenhouse. The stylish rear window glass stretch towards the license plate to join the LED tail-lamps found on the liftgate. Its wide opening allows easier handling of large packages in and out of the vehicle.

Adding to the Bolt EV’s characteristic aggressive look are the bold LED headlamps that curve around the front fascia. The dual element grille, which is unique to Chevrolet, has been re-designed and now comes with a neat and smooth finish as well as incorporates a three-dimensional element. It comes in two signature colours that blend perfectly with the exterior.

The Design Head commented that the Bolt EV’s designing focused on our daily lives’ need for space and it serves all everyday purposes like going shopping with friends or moving out for the weekend.

Its interiors as well as exteriors make a distinctive Chevy identity and fulfil all expectations that can be offered by an affordable EV. Production of the 2017 Bolt EV begins in the later part of this year.

Interior Design

Bolt EV has a large roomy interior on account of a small battery packing. It thus has seats for five passengers and a large cargo space of 16.9 cubic feet at the back. Norris further said that the flat battery packing gave the advantage of a proportionate design that was smoothly sculpted. Every seat allows for a great view.

Owing to the additional space, the designers had much leeway in creating its design and storage areas. Another feature that adds to the horizontal feel in the interiors is the ‘floating’ instrument panel with a 10.2 inch diagonal capacitive-touch control screen. This particular design gives ample knee room and cross-vehicle roominess.

Furthermore, it comes with a connected center console that holds side-to-side cupholders, a wireless charging area, and a sliding armrest under which lies a storage compartment that can easily fit in a tablet.

On the backside, the Bolt EV has 16.9 cubic feet of cargo space which is still larger than that of the Honda Fit (16.6 cubic feet) and the BMW i3 (15.1 cubic feet). Intelligent engineering has achieved very effective use of space.

For example, its thin frame seats make the rear-seat roomier. The seats also feature side air bag modules. The vehicle’s interiors come in bright colours. The signature-colour Electrification blue ambient lighting gives off a beautiful glow from under the metallic white decorative trim.
