2017 Ford GT could have carbon-fiber wheels, but only as an option, spokesman says

Article by Christian Andrei, on October 13, 2015

Carbon fiber wheels may soon become a new trend for Ford’s muscle cars. There have been reports that the new Mustang GT that debuted at the North American International Auto Show could be fitted with wheels made with this lightweight material as well.

Carbon fiber wheels made their debut with the Shelby Mustang GT350R, although it’s not a standard feature. Instead, it is an option for buyers who would like to further make their new vehicles lighter and, thus, more powerful.

Moreover, the reports allege that an Australian company named Carbon Revolution is exclusively manufacturing the wheels, which are incredibly lightweight at only 18 pounds each, for Ford’s new GT supercar.

However, company spokesperson Paul Seredynski told Autoblog that Ford has not actually made a final decision on equipping the new 2017 Ford GT with carbon fiber rims. He also indicated that the rims might be offered only as an option, similar to the carbon fiber wheels on the Shelby Mustang GT350R.

Even if the new GT doesn’t offer carbon-fiber rims as standard, it still is a formidable beast with its new twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter 600-hp EcoBoost V6 petrol engine. The new Ford GT’s design blends the old with the new.

Visually based on the first Ford GT, the GT features 20-inch rims paired with Michelin Pilot Super Sport Cup 2 tires. The tires are even made of a compound that’s made specifically for Ford’s new supercar, as well as a structure that’s equally tailor-made.

These features are rounded out by ceramic disc brakes. While carbon fiber may not be standard for its wheels, Ford did create the car’s passenger cell out of the material in order to save weight. The new Ford GT also uniquely features seats that are built directly into the passenger cell.

Fixed passenger seats could make it difficult for some drivers of short stature to drive in the new Ford GT, so Ford has compensated by making the pedals and steering column adjustable. The new steering for the Ford GT also takes cues from the F1 racing cars.

Both it and the full digital instrument cluster give the driver all the information that he or she needs at a glance. All of these amazing and innovative features have led Raj Nair, Ford’s group vice president for Global Product Development, to describe the new GT as the embodiment of every enthusiast’s desires for features in a super car.

Nair also promised that the inventions that have been created for the new GT supercar will make their appearance in Ford’s future products as the company aims to break standards and introduce new ones in terms of performance.
