2018 Jeep Wrangler will receive an 8-speed automatic transmission

Article by Christian Andrei, on November 24, 2014

Everyone knows that the 2018 Jeep Wrangler is a very important model for Fiat Chrysler Automobiles and the company needs to make sure that the redesign will attract even more customers. According to a filing this month with the Securities and Exchange commission, the 2018 Wrangler will arrive with an 8-speed automatic transmission in order to return an outstanding fuel economy.

The 8-speed tranny is currently used by the 2014 Ram 1500, Dodge Durango as well as the Jeep Grand Cherokee. Chrysler wants to take things even further and use the transmission in all its rear-wheel-drive vehicles, excepting the Dodge Viper and the heavy-duty versions of the Ram pick-up trucks.

Compared with the current 5-speed transmission, the new 8-speed automatic gearbox will improve fuel economy by 9 percent.

For those who don’t know, the 2015 Jeep Wrangler using the 5-speed automatic transmission, returns 17 mpg in the city and 21 mpg on the highway. It appears that Chrysler wanted to use the 8-speed transmission in the Wrangler before the 2018 redesign, but due to the lack of space it had to install it in the 2018MY.
