The Concorso di Eleganza di Villa d'Este has named the Alfa Romeo Disco Volante by Touring as the most appealing vehicle in the “Concept Cars & Prototypes” class. Based on Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione, the Alfa Romeo Disco Volante by Touring was a perfect example of ideal blend of aesthetics, sporty highlights and other essential. It was crafted by the Milanese atelier using cutting-edge materials like carbon fiber and aluminum for minimal weight.
Each example of the Alfa Romeo Disco Volante by Touring is a fruit of over 4000 hours of high-skilled labor. The examples are built only upon request, and the first one was displayed at the Concorso while another two are bound for completion. Alfa Romeo Disco Volante by Touring pays homage to the Alfa Romeo 1900 C52 “Disco Volante,” a distinctly made coupe built 60 years ago. The Alfa Romeo 1900 C52 “Disco Volante” was designed by Carrozzeria Touring in 1952, featuring extreme lightness and aerodynamic efficiency.
The impressive design of the Alfa Romeo 1900 C52 earned it the nicknamed ‘Disco Volante,’ which means “Flying Saucer.” The Alfa Romeo 1900 C52 “Disco Volante” then became an icon of auto design. The Alfa Romeo Disco Volante by Touring is underpinned by the same platform that carries the Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione. This light, rigid chassis allowed the atelier to create high-performance car in the persona of the Alfa Romeo Disco Volante by Touring.
The platform of the Alfa Romeo Disco Volante by Touring features a mid-front engine, transaxle gearbox and rear-wheel drive – a layout that provides an optimal 49-51% load distribution between the front and rear ends. The platform also features double-wishbone suspension, with forged aluminum uprights and supports as well as additional strut at the rearl.
