It has been a terrible season for Jarno Trulli (a one-time winner of the Formula One grand prix) but Audemars Piguet doesn’t seem to mind that as Trulli is being honored with a commemorative special edition. In the past, Audemars Piguet has had F1 drivers, Rubens Barrichello and Juan Pablo Montoya, as its ambassadors.
Of course Trulli has an impressive resume, as he has been a Formula Three national champion and has been racing in F1 since 1997. The Formula One grand prix has only had 102 winners, meaning that Trulli certainly deserves the honor. He also had pole position four times, the podium 11 times and so far in his career, had scored over 246 points.
But the issue here is the timing. Trulli has spent several seasons being a member of teams such as Minardi, Prost, Jordan, Renault and Toyota, but this year, he has been driving for newcomer Lotus Racing. To date, he was unable to start one race, unable to finish another six, and has not scored a single championship point this year. But then even with Trulli not being at a high point in his career, his timepiece is another story.
The Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore Jarno Trulli Chronograph has a forged carbon-fiber case, a ceramic bezel, titanium fixtures, red luminous indices and hands. It also features a 59-jewel automatic movement with no fewer than 365 parts, a 60-hour power reserve and a 22-carat gold oscillating weight that has been wrapped in anthracite.
This timepiece will only be made in 500 examples. Initially, it will be offered at Audemars Piguet’s boutique in Tokyo where it was launched at this year's Japanese Grand Prix. But the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore Jarno Trulli Chronograph is expected to soon go global.
