We all have to wait a while longer for the arrival of the Audi A6 Hybrid, which was expected to be released by the end of 2011. Instead, the new A6 Hybrid will arrive in Europe sometime in the middle of 2012.
The U.S. market will only see the new “eco-A6” in 2014. There’s no doubt that it will be a top-seller. It will get even more sales if the fuel prices continue to go up. This new hybrid will use the technological setup from the Q5 Hybrid.
This means that the A6 Hybrid will be powered by a 2.0-liter TFSI engine that delivers 208bhp. It will also be fitted with a 33kW electric motor that adds 44bhp.
These elements enable the A6 Hybrid to accelerate from zero to 60 mph in 7.3 seconds, offer a fuel economy rating of 44.1mpg, and only have CO2 emissions of 146g/km.
The new Audi A6 Hybrid is priced at about $65,000, which makes it quite expensive but it does come with the assurance that you’re contributing to helping the planet.
Audi also provides an option that’s more convenient: the 3.0 TDi quattro A6. It has an output of 243bhp and it can sprint from a standstill to 60mph in 7.0 seconds with an average fuel economy of 55mpg.
Its CO2 emissions are higher but it does cost about $8,000 cheaper than the hybrid. As diesel engines aren’t very much liked in the U.S., it’s expected that the top spot will belong to the 3.0 TFSI Quattro.
In collaboration with Google, Audi developed and fitted the A6 with online services that are accessible by using a Bluetooth car phone to connect to the web. Its UMTS module for example, works in conjunction with Google Earth to get information and images that are integrated to the navigation route and then displayed on the monitor. By putting in a WLAN hotspot, occupants can go online through terminals for mobile phones.
As expected from Audi, entertainment is top-of-the-line with the Bang & Olufsen Advanced Sound System. One attractive feature is how the MMI navigation manages to work well with the different safety and assistance systems, though these are offered as an option. What it does is send the route data to the various control units which manage the adaptive control that has the stop & go function, automatic transmission, and headlights. Combined, these different systems are able to identify complex situations and help the driver.
With the pre sense safety systems inside the A6, it is able to lower possible accidents and their effects, and maybe even avoid them. With the active lane assist, the driver can make sure that the A6 stays on the road. The park assist system removes the task of steering from the driver when doing parallel parking. In terms of design, the A6 has an elegant and sporty look. Its length stands at 16.14 feet (4.92 meters) with width at 6.14 feet (1.87 meters).
Height however is at 4.79 feet (1.46 meters), ensuring that its athletic proportions are unmatched by those in the same class. Helping the A6 have an overall dynamic look are the prominent lines on its sides, the sweeping and low roofline, and the long engine hood. Offered as an option, the headlights are fitted with LEDs which reinforce the already striking face of the front portion. The exterior and its powerful style are also evident in the interior, which delivers a good amount of space.
The key element of the interior is known as the wrap-around. This is the inlay which encloses both the passenger in the front and the driver. By utilizing the dash panel that is gracefully curved, the driver is able to be at the interior’s center. A number of details in the interior are proof that the brand does put a lot of investment when it comes to manufacturing automobiles. Every material used, like the layered-wood veneer, has all been carefully chosen and crafted.
Audi is offering a lighting package which allows sophisticated ambient lighting inside the A6. The brand is offering as an option fitting the seats in the front with massage and ventilation functions. As expected from a model coming from Audi, the A6 also includes the logical ergonomics concept, a feature that enables it to be differentiated from the competition. Fitted as standard are the newest MMI radio operating system and the automatic air conditioning system.
There is also the heads-up display which shows important data on the windshield though this is available as an option. An option as well is the MMI touch operating system which allows the hard-drive MMI navigation plus system inside the A6 to be managed through a touchpad.
