Audi Q3 to create 700 new jobs at Seat’s Martorell plant in Spain

Article by Christian A., on March 23, 2011

It’s not a secret anymore that Audi will start production of the Q3 crossover later this year as we already announced that the new vehicle will make its debut at the 2011 Shanghai Auto Show next month. Moreover, last week we told you that Seat began to train its workers from the Martorell plant in order to be sure that the production of the Audi Q3 will be under control.

And the good news continue as Volkswagen said that the production of the Audi Q3 will create 700 new jobs at its Martorell plant, near Barcelona.

A total of 1,200 people will receive training and the workers will be incorporated into the company, beginning later this year. Volkswagen wants to invest almost 300 million euros ($425 million) in the Martorell plant and said that it plans to build up to 100,000 Q3s a year.

Regarding the Q3’s design, do expect to see a smaller version of the Audi Q5. This means that we will see the big front grille carrying the Audi logo, a stylish set of headlights featuring LED technology and the same high-quality interior seen on all the Audi models.

Under the hood we will see the powerful 2.0-liter TSI engine found also on the all-new 2011 Volkswagen Tiguan but also the popular 2.0-liter TDI engine.

Audi is entering a new market segment with the introduction of the Audi Q3, a premium compact SUV. This sporty, efficient and versatile vehicle is as comfortable off-road as it is on the road. All aspects of the Q3 reveal Audi technology, including the body, chassis, drivetrain as well as the assistance and multimedia systems. Majority of its solutions come directly from the luxury class.

It is easy to recognize the Audi Q3 as the youngest member of the huge Audi family. Its coupe-like lines reveal its sporty personality. It has sharp edges that gracefully frame the arched sheet metal surfaces while distinct lights highlight the front and rear. Wedge-shaped headlights come as an option with xenon plus units as well as LED daylight running lights that go together with LED tail lights.

It includes a low roof line which starts to drop quite early plus extremely flat D-pillars give emphasis to the Audi Q3’s dynamics. Additional parts are offered in different variants. Customers can opt for anthracite, black or the body color. They can also choose from two exterior packages.

Audi Q3’s base version, which has a weight of 1,445 kg or 3,186 lbs, will be available a bit later. It comes with a safe, quiet and rigid occupant cell, which includes a few ultra-high-strength steels. The engine hood and tailgate alike are aluminum-made. Like the other Q models from Audi, the Q3 has undivided tail lights incorporated into the tailgate, which wraps the pillars. It has an uncommonly low coefficient of drag at only 0.32. The compact SUV measures 4.39 meters (14.40 ft) length x 1.83 meters (6.00 ft) width x 1.59 meters (5.22 ft) height.

The Audi Q3 has enough space for five occupants and sets new workmanship and ergonomics standards. A wide range of interior materials and colors provides customers with numerous possibilities to express their own individual style. A large arc that extends from the front door to another, called the wrap-around, is a design feature coming from the huge Audi model series.

The compact SUV has a luggage compartment capable of 460 liters (16.24 cu ft) and this can be increased to 1,365 liters (48.20 cu ft) when the split rear seat backs are folded down. It comes standard with a roof rail. There are other useful options, such as a luggage compartment package as well as a pass-through hatch that make the Q3 more versatile and practical for daily use.

Additional Highlights: The Equipment

The Audi Q3 includes a lengthy list of standard equipment, consisting of the air conditioning, chorus audio system and an all-inclusive package of restraint systems. Also, it allows customers to choose optional equipment coming straight from the luxury class like the adaptive light system for xenon plus headlights, panoramic glass roof, LED interior lighting package, high-beam assistant and power-adjustable front seats.

Many useful options, including a luggage compartment package and a pass-through hatch, make the Q3 even more versatile and convenient in everyday use.
