Audi set to launch R5 two-seater rival to Lotus, source says

Audi has plans to launch a brand new mid-engined sports two-seater to compete with models from Lotus, according to Carmagazine sources. In recent years, Audi has transitioned from being a producer of gray saloons for businessmen to being a maker of supercars that can rival those of Porsche and Aston Martin.

The Carmagazine report further revealed that Audi’s two-seater will share its “MiMo” (Mittelmotor - mid-engined in German) with other future sports cars from Porsche and Volkswagen.

Audi has yet to confirm this report but it actually is sensible for Audi to come up with it since Lotus has a gap in its new lineup for a lighter mid-engined sports car with a prominent German badge. Audi is aiming for this car to be light so that it can offer improved fuel efficiency and driving dynamics.

That is why this car is designed to only measure 3.9 meters (153 inches) long. An electric motor powers the e-tron concept on which the R5 will be based on, making it likely that there will be a hybrid version.

But we can anticipate that the top-of-the-line variant of the R5 will feature Audi’s more traditional 2.5-liter turbo engine from the TT-RS. It is also likely that the car will be offered with smaller 2.0-liter TSI engines that have low emissions. [via CarMagazine]
