Audi to offer 8-speed transmission on most of it models

Article by Christian A., on August 25, 2010

Audi is considering whether to offer the 8-speed transmission installed on the all-new 2011 A8 across the range. If this report by Insideline is true, it is set to become the most popular gearbox. Audi has yet to confirm or deny this story.

It is believed that the transmission will improve fuel economy by around 14% as compared to a five-speed automatic setup.

This is also compatible with some other fuel reduction technologies, such as start-stop systems that also contribute to the final figures. Audi made a statement in late 2009 during the official introduction of the new A8.

It stated that the standard new transmissions play a large role in increasing efficiency. The 8-speed tiptronic is said to finely graduate its eight gears while achieving a large overall spread.

The company had also stated that its control system is purely electronic, operated with an elegant selector level and rocker switches at the steering wheel.

There are speculations that the entry-level Audi A3 is one of the models that could get the eight-speed transmission no matter what engine configuration is chosen. It's probable that opting for this unit will raise the price of the car.
