Audi to roll out 2012 R8 exclusive editions to the US next month

Article by Anita Panait, on August 14, 2012

Audi announced the arrival of 2012 R8 models designed exclusively to target consumer in the U.S., all based on the R8 V8 and R8 V10 Coupes. The carmaker will only produce twenty 2012 Exclusive Selection Edition R8 V8 vehicles and thirty 2012 Exclusive Selection Edition R8 V10 vehicles.

The 2012 Exclusive Selection Edition R8 V8 features a Daytona Gray matte exterior, complemented by carbon fiber exterior splitter and diffuser, 19” titanium five-arm double spoke wheels and black grille surround. The 2012 Exclusive Selection Edition R8 V8 also sports black exhaust finishers, R8 GT tail lamps, and red brake calipers.

The interior of the 2012 Exclusive Selection Edition R8 V8 includes an exclusive leather package with Crimson Red elements and contrast stitching. The interior also features exclusive leather Navigation surround, and a thicker contoured leather multifunctional steering wheel for a sportier grip. The 2012 Exclusive Selection Edition R8 V8 is powered by a 4.2-liter FSI® V8 that provides up to 430 hp at 7,900 rpm, with 316 lb-ft of torque at 4,500 - 6,000 rpm. Other features include Bang & Olufsen Sound System and Navigation with the Audi Music Interface.

2012 Exclusive Selection Edition R8 V10, on the other hand, comes with a shimmering Ibis white exterior and Brilliant Black features – including the sideblade, exterior mirrors, and rear license plate surround. The exterior of the 2012 Exclusive Selection Edition R8 V10 is further complemented by R8 GT tail lamps and 19” bi-color e-tron wheels. Its interior features Ibis finishes and Alabaster White contrast stitching.

The interior of the 2012 Exclusive Selection Edition R8 V10 comes with a Carbon Fiber monoposto driver’s cockpit. It also comes with an exclusive leather Navigation surround and contoured steering wheel. The 2012 Exclusive Selection Edition R8 V10 is powered by a 5.2-liter FSI V10 that provides up to 525 hp at 8,000 rpm with 391 lb-ft of torque at 6,500 rpm.

With dimensions of 4.44 meters (14.57 ft) in length, 1.90 meters (6.23 ft) in width and 1.25 meters (4.10 ft.) in height (1.24 meters or 4.07 ft. for the Spyder), the new Audi R8 features dynamic proportions with elegantly sporty looks. Defined overall by sharp lines and arched surfaces, the new Audi R8 features the so-called loop, which is a wrap-around contour that visually links the front end, wheel wells, flanks and rear end of the sports car.

Notice that the cabin features a more forward position than typical sports cars. This is mainly because the new Audi R8 employs a mid-engine concept. In the coupe version of the R8, the side-blades -- upright air intakes located in front of the rear wheels – indicate the location of the engine. Interestingly, the right side-blade features a solid aluminum gas cap. In the roadster version, the sideblades are gone and are replaced by large air intakes sculpted out of the flanks.

The front end of the new Audi R8 features the new high-gloss black Singleframe grille with striking tapered top corners. V10-powered versions of the new Audi R8 feature grille struts with fine chrome strips while the four Audi rings are relocated from the grille to the hood. On the rear end, the new Audi R8 features a redesigned bumper, black air intakes as well as brakes with three crossbars.

Standard on the V10-powered Audi R8 is a front splitter made from carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP), which is offered as an option to non-V10 models. The new R8 V10 is distinguished by matt Titanium Gray air intakes and some tweaks to the Singleframe grille.
