It appears that Audi continues to make some of the best engines on the market and, as a result, today it received another award. Audi’s V10 TDI engine found on the Audi R15 TDI received the “Global Motorsport Race Engine of the Year” award. According to the manufacturer, the engine delivers the perfect combination of efficiency, power, reliability and received the award after it was reviewed by 50 international engine experts.
The V10 TDI engine was tested for the last time in the 12-hour race at Sebring (USA), an event which attracted more than than 100,000 spectators. Unfortunately, at the Intercontinental Le Mans Cup (ILMC) at Sebring the Audi R15 TDi vehicles didn’t manage to win the race as they were involved in some involuntary incidents.
“Absolutely. Naturally, we would have liked to achieve a successful conclusion of the R15’s career. The car really handled superbly at Sebring but, unfortunately, we missed victory. We need to get past this now and look ahead.” said Mike Rockenfeller, Audi factory driver for the Le Mans Series, when asked if the race at Sebring, R15 TDI’s last, was a special one.
Here is what Rockenfeller had to say when asked if his life changed in any way as a result of the Le Mans victory: “Not really. But it’s true that my visibility has increased as a result of this victory. People continue to approach and congratulate me – still being the current Le Mans winner. I won’t deny the fact that I enjoy this. More important, however, is the experience which Timo (Bernhard), Romain (Dumas) and I have had. We showed that we can win at Le Mans. The knowledge of being able to do it will strengthen us as a team because we want to be successful again this year.”
A tribute to the Audi Sport: Following the Audi R10 TDI’s V12 TDI engine in 2007, Audi R15 TDI’s V10 TDI engine has been awarded as well as given the title of "Global Motorsport Race Engine of the Year" by an international panel of judges in this field of expertise.
The Audi power-plant is a fusion of engine power, reliability and efficiency -- critical features that were considered by a panel of 50 global engine specialists who served as judges. Their expertise was utilized by an expert British publishing house to choose the winner for the 2010 season award.
It was the last time for the V10 engine to join the 12-hour racing competition in Sebring, USA. It was so exciting that it drew a crowd of over 100,000 viewers. At this affair, Audi USA guests had the pleasure of getting an extra-special view of the track as they saw the race from the 2-floor "Turn 1 Club" on the inside of the first curve. Hans-Joachim Stuck was one of the guests on location. To those who may not know, the Volkswagen Group representative has earned the American endurance victory three times as a driver. It’s also interesting to note that the new overalls produced by Italian company Alpinestars were used by Audi drivers and mechanics for the first time at Sebring. Audi Sport Team Joest will remain at Sebring for a couple of days. The team’s agenda will include Monday’s start of track tests with the car representing the build stage of the new Audi R18. During the tests, the nine Le Mans drivers, together with Marco Bonanomie, will control the wheel. Meanwhile, a new Audi Sport partner: The logo of Sanyo, an electronics specialist, has been adorned on Tom Kristensen, the overall record winner of Le Mans since the Sebring race. On the weekend prior to the 12-hour Sebring race, Allan McNish joined in the Go Green Auto Rally in Miami. At the driver’s seat of an Audi A8, he told visitors how adopting a particular driving style can considerably improve fuel economy during the usual road traffic.
In one of the most notable victories for the Audi R8, Briton Andy Wallace was driving the most successful LMP1 car ever when he won a racing competition for historic vehicles arranged as part of the program supporting the 12-hour race at Sebring.
Dindo Capello, the Audi factory driver who was given the "Golden Helmet" award of the "Autosprint" magazine was guest of honor at the presentation of "Formula Monza" at the start of March. The Italian himself climbed into the single-seat racer to perform a number of demo laps.
It’s also interesting how Swede Mattias Ekström, whose left wrist got injured in a sporting accident, continues to recover according to the plan. On Wednesday, he will have some X-rays taken once more in Zurich. The two-time DTM Champion said that the plan is to take off his cast as soon as possible.
Thursday was the first time Rahel Frey and Martin Tomczyk visited Audi Sport Team Phoenix, which they will compete for in the 2011 DTM season. Ernst Moser, the team director, personally accompanied his two drivers to tour the team’s facilities near Nürburgring. The two racers with their new team will have their first track tests scheduled in the beginning of April at the EuroSpeedway Lausitz.
Incidentally, Frey and Tomczyk appeared together in Hamburg during the early part of March. Using an Audi R8 LMS, they competed in the 2011 rallye racing Carrera Cup, a series of races for slot cars at the Axel-Springer-Passage.
Audi RS 3 was presented to the press at a Monte Carlo event, where four Audi DTM drivers came as guests: Rahel Frey, Edoardo Mortara, Miguel Molina and Filipe Albuquerque. They gave some information regarding the sportiest A3 as well as Audi’s DTM commitment, to the audience, consisting of invited reporters and media. Based on the present situation, Audi customer teams will compete in a series of 17 different races using the Audi R8 LMS in 2011.
