Bentley receives recycling certification

Article by Christian A., on August 29, 2010

Bentley, the British automaker has made a bold new move in providing its top of the class environmental strategy with a guarantee that the materials utilized in all of its existing Continental models are 85% recyclable or 95% recoverable.

It is the first carmaker in the luxury car category to take such a step together with the eco-friendly scheme of recycling or recovery at the termination of the car's usability.

The move of the British company has received the official recognition of the German Motor Transport Authority (KBA) with a presentation of the European-wide certificates to Bentley top brass.

With Bentley recycling and recovering schemes, other industries will be able to reuse or reprocess the majority of materials used in the construction of their cars. In tandem with the use of these recyclable and recoverable materials, Bentley also experienced an improvement in its manufacturing processes.

There was a significant decrease of gas, water and electricity consumption by about 25% in contrast to the last nine years even though car production has increased ten-fold in that period.

Besides improving the environmental output of production, the strategy also consists of the timely introduction of eco-friendly technologies into the vehicles themselves.

The first serial model, the Continental Supersports, which was already introduced at the Geneva Motor Show, uses either gasoline or ethanol, a fuel that has been known to reduce emissions of CO2.

As the trailblazer in the luxury segment, the carmaker is opening the way for a customer-based shift toward alternative fuels.

The company is intent on putting all their models on flex fuel technology by 2012. In combination with this will be a new powertrain that is known to reduce fuel consumption by an amazing 40%. By 2012, Bentley fleet will come with reduced CO2 emissions of 15%.
