The 2016 Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este has been chosen as the venue to unveil a special model that pays tribute to BMW 2002 turbo – the BMW 2002 Hommage. This special model is basically a re-imagination and a new interpretation of the BMW 2002, adopting the shape of a compact sports coupe in the tradition of BMW Hommage vehicles.
While the BMW 2002 Hommage celebrates the extraordinary engineering achievements attained in the creation of the BMW 2002 turbo, it is also a well-defined statement of how pure driving should be in 2016.
Adrian van Hooydonk, Senior Vice President at BMW Group Design, quipped that the 02 range was responsible for launching an era of success for BMW 50 years ago, adding that the BMW 2002 turbo is one of the vehicles that has made the BMW brand what it is today. He noted that the range-topping 2002 was the first series-produced car in Europe featuring turbo technology, thereby cementing the coupe’s status as a genuine sports car.
He added that the 2002 turbo back then was at the forefront of engine development at BMW.
