BMW is hoping that with the new design of the Z4 it will be more attractive to women than the previous model. Between 2004 and 2008, about 200,000 units of the outgoing model have been sold but most of the buyers, between 80 to 90 percent, were men. The new Z4 design is not as masculine as it was previously; it is more floating and round.
The new variant will hit dealers in Germany with a 35,900 Euro ($48,650) price tag. Sales ranking for the Z4 is in this order: the US, which is the biggest market, followed by the UK, Germany, Italy and Japan.
BMW targets to sell more of the new model compared with the preceding one and win over the competitors' customers to their side.
Like it's competitor, Mercedes-Benz, BMW is now replacing the soft top of its roadster with a retractable aluminum top. It takes 20 seconds to open or close the new top.
The latest Z4 comes with a classic roadster form, with a long hood and short overhangs. It is intended to attract enthusiasts of the Porsche Boxster, Audi TT, and Alfa Romeo Spider.
The new Z4 comes with more luggage space making it more practical than the preceding version.
Powerplant options for the Z4 include three in-line 6-cylinder units generating between 204hp to 306hp. BMW is developing a stop-start system for the Z4. Option included in the Z4 sDrive 35i version is a 7-gear, dual-clutch sport auto transmission.
