BMW will celebrate its centenary in 2016 and as a result, the Bavarian manufacturer has a big surprise for its fans. The German carmaker will roll out the i9 hybrid supercar, which will continue the tradition of the M1. According to Automotorundsport, the new i9 is actually a super-i8 and deserves the i10 name but due to the fact that Hyundai already offers a model that has that name, BMW had to change it.
I9 will have a curb weight of 1490 kg, which means it will be heavier than the i8, and will be capable to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in less than four seconds. Just like the i8, the BMW i9 will carry the combustion engine at the front, while the rear axle will be powered by the electric motor.
For those who don’t know, the BMW i8 is powered by a 1.5-liter TwinPower Turbo petrol engine that generates 231 hp (170 kW) and 320 Nm of torque. In addition, the vehicle uses an electric motor that produces 131 hp (96 kW) and 250 Nm of torque.
With a total output of 362 hp (266 kW) and 570 Nm of torque, the hybrid system pushes the vehicle from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.5 seconds, while top speed is electronically limited at 250 km/h or 155 mph.
