BMW M6 Gran Coupe unofficially confirmed

Article by Anita Panait, on January 17, 2012

The first spy photos of the new BMW M6 Gran Coupe have now been released! The spy pictures bare the four-door Gran Coupe’s muscular exterior, which shows the trademark M quad exhausts. The pictures also show the Gran Coupe’s large black twin five spoke alloys, which might be hiding possibly carbon ceramic brake discs.

The car’s styling seems to be more aggressive than the 6-series Gran Coupe donor car, which sports an M body kit with a new front bumper, wider sills and a rear diffuser.

BMW M6 Gran Coupe is powered by a twin-turbo 4.4-litre V8 engine with an output of 552bhp and a torque of 501lb/ft. The power is transmitted to the rear wheels through a seven-speed dual clutch gearbox. The M6 could accelerate from zero to 62mph in less than 4.5 seconds and could reach a top speed of up to 155mph.

M6 Gran Coupe is a lower and more focused variant of the M5, with a lower roofline and a more slippery silhouette. The lower body design results to a lower center of gravity. BMW will unveil the 6-series Gran Coupe around six months from now and will launch the M6 four-door version in 2013.

BMW will unveil the two-door M6 this year.  The M6 is touted to rival Mercedes’ CLS63 AMG, which is run by a twin-turbo 5.5-litre V8 engine resulting in an output of 518bhp and a torque of 516lb ft.

BMW M6 Gran Coupe boasts a chassis technology that is geared towards harnessing the vehicle's sporting potential in order for it to deliver supreme performance. Just like its integral rear axle, the car’s double-wishbone front axle possesses specific kinematics as well as components that are made from forged aluminium. The chassis mountings use large panels and ensure that dynamic forces are evenly passed through to the body. Moreover, the M6 Gran Coupe comes with a Dynamic Damper Control system in M-specific version as a standard as well as hydraulic variable-ratio rack-&-pinion steering with M-Servotronic function.

You can also get the M carbon-ceramic brakes for your M6 Gran Coupe as alternative to the high-performance compound braking system (standard). This carbon-ceramic brake is made from a new kind of carbon-fiber compound ceramic, with discs that boast greater heat resistance, exceptional resistance to wear, and lower weight.

Buttons used to configure the adjustable chassis and powertrain functions according to your personal preference are arranged around your car’s gearshift lever found on the center console. Also, you can select the DSC mode, the Dynamic Damper Control mapping, the engine performance characteristics, the M-DCT Drivelogic shift program, and the M Servotronic responses independently from each other. All these mean that you can have a detailed set-up then store these settings on one of two M Drive buttons found on the multifunctional steering wheel.

The M6 Gran Coup’s standard equipment includes 20” M light-alloy wheels, heated driver seat and front passenger seat, leather trim, automatic dimming rear-view mirror and exterior mirror, alarm system, and BMW Professional radio equipped with hi-fi loudspeakers. Also available as alternative to the car’s standard two-zone automatic climate control is the four-zone system with a control panel in the rear compartment.
