Chinavision introduces new rearview mirror with GPS, Bluetooth and touchscreen games

Article by Christian A., on December 6, 2011

Chinavasion is offering a kit that could replace a standard rearview mirror with a GPS and Bluetooth 2.1 enabled unit that features a 4.3-inch touchscreen for multimedia playback. Consumers could play touchscreen games on it and it has some DVR capabilities that allow the driver to record what goes on inside the car as well as what’s outside it.

Chinavision is a gadget wholesaler based in Hong Kong. Ford, Toyota and Mazda have come out with rearview mirrors that display what could be seen from rear-mounted cameras. But this one comes with a GPS-enabled rearview mirror that has a 4-inch touchscreen and Bluetooth.

This mirror is meant to fit over a standard factory mirror and no installation or setup is required. It consists of a charger that could be plugged into a car's DC connector and a power cable so that there’s a permanent connection to the battery of the car. Powering the GPS is a SiRF Atlas VI chip and a Centrality Atlas 4 Dual-Core 500 MHz processor.

It is compatible with nearly all brands of GPS software, including TomTom, iGO, Route66. However, there are several issues on the Garmin that have to be resolved. With the microphone and speakers installed on the unit, users can make or receive hands-free calls and listen to music through a Bluetooth connected mobile phone.

Meanwhile, the included waterproof wireless rearview camera helps negotiate parking. The mirror has a camera embedded in it that could record video (AVI, MOV, ASF, MP4, WMV) at as much as 640 x 480 resolution at 30 fps onto SD or Micro SD cards of up to 32 GB capacity. The DVR functionality allows users to record interior and exterior sound that could be useful if there’s an accident.

Its multimedia playback capabilities offer video entertainment through the 480 x 272 pixel 4.3-inch touchscreen, including several touchscreen games. This unit can support the MP4, AVI, MPG, WMV and 3GP video, MP3, WMA and WAV audio, BMP, JPG, PNG and GIF images, as well as TXT documents.

The Complete Car Bluetooth Rearview Mirror Kit is targeted at eBay sellers. It also comes with a 4 GB Micro SD card and 4 GB SD card. Chinavasion has set its price at about US$200 for a single unit. Discounts are given for bulk purchases.
