Despite its death, Carroll Shelby’s legacy and voice continue to be heard

Article by Christian A., on August 24, 2012

The late Carroll Shelby continues to rule Shelby American from his grave via a playbook that was co-written with CEO John Luft before he died. Luft had the chance to sit down with Motor Trend and talk about what could be expected from the company in the near future. Earlier this year, Shelby passed away but his legacy and voice continue to be heard as this playbook contains details about plans for the company over the next few years until 2020 at least.

Shelby American is developing new performance cars and parts. Shelby’s current product offerings include the GT500 Super Snake, which is offered with either 750 or 850 hp, and the not as potent GT350. Luft said that at the Detroit auto show this January, the company will display a modified version of the GT500 Super Snake.

Aside from delivering at least 850hp, we don’t have details yet. According to the playbook, Shelby will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Daytona Coupe and 427 Cobra, which suggests that there will be a commemorative event in 2015. It’s also believed that the company will commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Le Mans winner Ford GT40 a few years later after.

In the past few years, Carroll Shelby exerted a lot of effort to repair the relationship with Ford Motor Company. The partnership has given us products like the 2007 Ford Shelby GT500, the 2010 version, and the 662-hp 2013 GT500, which had come out just recently. It proves that Ford and Shelby again have a professional relationship.

Luft said that Shelby held the desire to work on other Ford models too. His targets most probably include the midsize Fusion and compact Focus. He was also intent on modifying the EcoBoost turbocharged engines. Since the 1980s, Carroll Shelby has been tweaking turbocharged pocket rockets. Shelby American has teamed up with Ford on a project for the Mustang’s 50th anniversary. So far, the companies have kept mum about this project. Ford and Shelby had recently collaborated on a Carroll Shelby tribute car based on a production 2013 GT500. [source: Automobilemag]
