The old 4-speed automatic transmission is one of the weaknesses of the Dodge Challenger SE. At last Dodge has decided to provide the Challenger SE an extra gear by giving it the 5-speed automatic found in the V8 models. Dodge also announced its latest Rallye Edition for those who have a penchant for racing stripes.
The Challenger SE 3.5-liter V6 unit with the 5-speed auto transmission generates the same 17mpg city and 25mpg highway just like the previous transmission.
The new transmission comes with an aggressive first-gear ratio for remarkable acceleration, according to Dodge, but that remains to be seen. The Challenger SE Rallye is the first V6 Challenger model to come with accented dual stripes and the first to come with stripes on the deck lid.
The car will come with seven exterior paint color finishes and two stripe-color arrangements. It also has a throw-back engine cover, a fuel filler in chrome, interior accents of micro carbon and Rallye wheels at 18 inches. The 2009 Dodge Challenger SE Rallye is priced beginning at $36,490 and will be built at Chrysler's Canadian Brampton Assembly plant when production begins this coming April.
Mike Accavitti, Director for Chrysler, Jeep and Dodge Brands at Chrysler LLC, remarked that the new 2009 Dodge Challenger SE Rallye "earns its stripes" by featuring a responsive five-speed automatic transmission derived from HEMI-powered Challenger models and fuel efficiency estimated at 25 miles per gallon.
He added that the 2009 Dodge Challenger SE Rallye exhibits its pony car DNA with its bold exterior enhancements like a body-color deck lid spoiler, 18-inch rallye wheels with black painted pockets and heritage-inspired chromed ‘FUEL' filler door.
Moreover, the Challenger SE Rallye features a throw-back hood and deck lid dual stripes with accent color outer stripes, all-season performance tires and Micro Carbon interior accents. It is powered by an aluminum block 3.5-liter 24-valve V6 engine that develops up to 250 hp (186 kW) of output and 250 lb.-ft. (339 Nm) of torque while returning 17 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway.
This engine is paired to a five-speed automatic transmission with Auto Stick, which is more responsive than a four-speed transmission. This five-speed automatic transmission features an aggressive first-gear ratio, which allows it to deliver exceptional launch performance and smoothness at any speed.
Customers can specify the new Dodge Challenger SE Rallye with any of the seven exterior paint colors and two-color stripe combinations: Brilliant Black Crystal Pearl (Dark Gray dual stripes and Red accent stripes); Bright Silver Metallic (Dark Gray dual stripes and Red accent stripes); Dark Titanium Metallic (Black dual stripes and Red accent stripes); Deep Water Blue Metallic (White dual stripes and Red accent stripes); Inferno Red Crystal Pearl (Black and Dark Gray accent stripes); Stone White (Black dual stripes and Red accent stripes); and TorRed (Black dual stripes and Dark Gray accent stripes).
On the other hand, the cabin of the new Dodge Challenger SE Rallye is inspired by the original Dodge Challenger, particularly trapezoidal theme of the door-panel cove and gauge cluster, slanted shifter console and dark headliner.
It also comes with a "four bomb" gauge cluster featuring deep legible white faces. Moreover, the cabin of Dodge Challenger SE Rallye is equipped with a premium cloth bucket seats as well as luxuriously comfortable available heated leather seats finished with French-seamed stitching.
