Dongfeng Peugeot Citroen Automobile Co. has launched its first-ever exports last week, sending off a batch of 120 Peugeot 408 compact cars to Egypt. Dongfeng Peugeot is a 50-50 joint venture of Dongfeng Motor Corp. and PSA/Peugeot-Citroen.
The company disclosed in a statement that it is targeting to expand its export operations over the next few years without providing a specific target.
This endeavor also made PSA the third international brand to export vehicles from China, after Honda and GM.
Honda exported the Fit/Jazz small vehicle, which was assembled at its plant in the south China city of Guangzhou to Europe. On the other hand, GM has exported minivans through its joint venture SAIC-GM-Wuling Automobile Co. to Latin America and Southeast Asia.
The joint venture of Dongfeng and PSA currently manufactures the Peugeot 307, 207 and 408 vehicles, as well as the C-Triomphe, Elysee, Citroen C4 Quatre, C5 and C2.
Through the first five months of 2011, the joint venture sold around 164,185 vehicles, which is 8.8 percent higher than the record set in the same period last year based on J.D. Power’s data.
Dongfeng Peugeot Citroen intends to commence selling the Peugeot 508 mid-sized sedan in China by August in order to expand its product offering in the country.
