TorrentFreak has revealed that "Fast Five," a heist action movie involving cars, is the number one film downloaded on BitTorrent in 2011. This film grossed $626.1 million across the globe. Specifically, the movie was downloaded almost 9.3 million times. This pales in comparison with last year's number one -- "Avatar" with more than 16 million downloads. "The Hangover Part II" was downloaded 8.8 million times. It grossed $581.5 million worldwide. "Thor" comes in the third spot, being downloaded 8.3 million times. This movie had a worldwide gross of $448.5 million.
The next six films were not among the top grosser last year. These are "Source Code" which was downloaded 7.9 million times, "I Am Number Four" downloaded 7.7 million times, and "Sucker Punch" downloaded 7.2 million times. The seventh spot belonged to "127 Hours," which only grossed $60.7 worldwide, with 6.9 million downloads. "Rango" with a worldwide gross of $245.2, was downloaded 6.5 million times. "The King's Speech," which achieved a $414.2 million worldwide gross and took the Oscar for Best Picture, was downloaded almost 6.3 million times.
The tenth spot belonged to "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows -- Part 2". It is the biggest film of 2011 with a worldwide gross of $1.33 billion. It was only downloaded 6 million times.
Among the movies mentioned, the total number of downloads was lower than last year. According to TorrentFreak, this low number could be credited to more legal alternatives as well as new piracy alternatives to BitTorrent such as Cyberlockers. However, the number of active BitTorrent users has not lowered.
