Do you put a premium on being struck by nostalgia? One such person that has taken the custom car world by storm with his creations that seem to step out from the 50s or 60s is designer Gary Fioto. He builds his cars at Chopit Kustoms and one of his masterpieces -- the 1955 Ford "Beatnik" Bubbletop custom concept – will be displayed in Florida for the annual RM Auction in Amelia Island on March 2.
The Beatnik is actually a fairly new creation, based on the body of a Ford model of that year; however, it rides on a modified chassis from a 1988 Lincoln Town Car.
Powering it is a 400hp, Chevrolet V-8 engine with six carburetors that is coupled to a GM automated transmission. Many have described the car as something that would be at home in an episode of “the Jetsons.”
The concept has received multiple awards at events such as the Grand National Roadster Show, the Detroit Autorama, the Fresno Autorama, the Sacramento Autorama, Darryl Starbird's Tulsa show, Carl Casper's Louisville show and Paso Robles. Fioto said that he wanted to build cars that are similar to those he remembers from his childhood. His creations also show his love for art deco and custom cars of the '40s, '50s, and '60s.
