A deal was reached between Azure Dynamics Corporation and Ford Motor Company wherein Azure will integrate its proprietary plug-in hybrid technology into the Ford F-Series Super Duty product line.
Azure, which develops and produces hybrid electric and electric components and powertrain systems for commercial vehicles, will allow its PHEV technology to be used in Ford's market leading F-Series Super Duty cab and chassis, the F-550, which may start to become available in early 2013.
With this deal, Azure will be able to perform hybrid powertrain conversions on other Super Duty platforms such as F-350 and F-450 models. It also spans all engine, frame length and regular production options and configurations. This Super Duty program enables Azure to expand its product lineup in the medium duty commercial truck segment that it is targeting.
Under the Azure/Ford agreement, there is a provision for a 'ship-thru' that allows Azure to put vehicles in the Ford transportation system and enables capable Ford Commercial Truck dealerships to offer the product as well as service it in major markets located in North America.
The Ford F-Series Super Duty, which has a market share that exceeds 50%, is the most reputable cab and chassis brand in North America. Each year, the commercial cab and chassis industry supports about100,000 vehicles.
It is the preferred active work-truck for numerous commercial fleets that manage a wide range of logistical needs. In addition, multiple diesel and gasoline engine options are offered by the Super Duty in a variety of cab, bed and accessories options.
