The combined sales of the Ford Fusion Energi and Ford C-MAX Energi in the United States in October 2013 beat the sales of the Toyota Prius plug-in hybrid in the period, allowing the US carmaker to take the top spot in plug-in hybrid vehicle sales for the month. The combined October sales of the Fusion Energi and C-MAX Energi reached 2,179, representing around 34 percent of the total plug-in hybrid market.
Sales of the Prius plug-in hybrid were 2,095 in the month. October marks the best month for Ford’s plug-in hybrid sales, breaking the sales record posted in September at 1,508 vehicles.
Ford’s plug-in hybrid vehicles managed to surpass Toyota’s offering just a year after launching the C-MAX Energi and less than a year since rolling out the Fusion Energi. Ford has been seeing its plug-in hybrid sales growing across the US, with California accounting for around 38 percent of the carmaker’s plug-in hybrid vehicle sales.
Plug-in hybrid sales are also gaining traction in midwestern and eastern regions like New York, Boston, Detroit, Chicago, Washington, D.C. and Philadelphia -- which combined accounts for 32 percent of the C-MAX Energi market and 34 percent of the Fusion Energi market. Only New York managed to post Fusion Energi sales figures close to San Francisco’s, coming in as the second most popular market for the unit.
Ford doubled October sales of the Fusion Energi in New York, Philadelphia and Washington, D.C. from the previous month. The industry’s plug-in hybrid sales grew 32 percent in the first 10 months of the year to 39,083 vehicles, compared to 29,526 vehicles in the same period in 2012. Plug-in hybrid sales in October were only 40 units short of setting an all-time monthly record for the segment. [source: Ford]
