German scientist reveals all-weather adaptive tires

Article by Christian Andrei, on May 3, 2012

With the “adaptive tire,” your car will always be equipped with the best set of tires possible no matter what the weather is. The world's first-ever "intelligent" tire is how this group of researchers at Leipzig University in Germany describes their latest project. This tire is equipped with electronic sensors that recognize various terrain types. It determines whether the car is being driven on motorway or un-tarmacked roads and if it’s dry, snowing, or raining. Best of all, the tire adapts to its current conditions even while the car is running. As a result, the driver can say goodbye to buying snow tires and to worrying about driving through bad weather.

Detlef Riemer is the head of this group of researchers at the University of Applied Sciences in Leipzig. They displayed the tire at the 2012 Hanover Fair this week, the biggest industrial fair in the world. Riemer said that the tire options are always a compromise between the ability to brake and petrol consumption.

The profiles of the tire can also be automatically raised or widened depending on the conditions even while the car is moving. Riemer said that a car with this tire would always have the best tire and because of this, the noise is lower and the petrol consumption is optimized too. However, the research is continuing and the tire is far from finished. What the researchers are busy with now is finding the best materials to be used as movable parts. Reimer asserted that the patents have already been filed. [source: NYDailyNews]
