General Motors has announced the recall of over 36,000 units of the 2012 Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain small crossovers around the world. GM is tasked to fix the tire pressure monitoring system in these cars. The automaker said that due to this defect, the driver may not be informed when the tire pressure drops below federal standards. In a statement, GM said that underinflated tires can lead to overloading and overheating, which could result to a blowout and possible crash.
When tires are prematurely worn out, it could result to poor handling and fuel economy. Almost 34,000 of the vehicles covered in this recall are in the U.S. The remaining cars are spread out in Canada, Mexico and six countries located in the Middle East. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said that the vehicles were made between July 18 and Sept. 6 of 2011.
A warning light is supposed to show when the tire pressure is 25% lower than the recommended levels for cold tire pressure. In these vehicles being recalled, the warning light only turns on when the tire pressure has fallen more than 25% below recommended levels.
Chevrolet chief Ed Peper described the new Equinox as a true Chevrolet as it bears the brand’s signature global face that includes the two-tier grille and the gold Bowtie insignia. This is further supported by the fact the Equinox is provided with strong fender shapes, wraparound headlamps and dual round taillamps as well as a characteristic premium roofline.
Ed Welburn, vice president of GM Global Design, quipped that the new Chevrolet Equinox fuses both function and style into a sporty and upscale compact crossover. He added that both the exterior and interior of the new Equinox has utilized careful attention to detail. For this model year, the Chevrolet Equinox features a wheels-at-the-corners stance, a multi-dimensional hood and wraparound rear side glass.
In addition, thanks to an array of carefully designed exterior elements like moving forward the base of the windshield by three inches (75 mm), the new Equinox features a sleeker profile and enhanced aerodynamic performance. Since the vehicle’s rocker panels have been integrated into the doors, ingress and egress have been rendered easier.
As these panels narrow the area over which a passenger must step, they could shield the pant legs from brushing against dirty rockers. While the use of chrome trim and flush-fitting "exposed-edge" windshield and rear glass augment the vehicle’s build quality, they also help reduce wind noise. Although, the Chevrolet Equinox is underpinned by the same 112.5-inch wheelbase (2,857 mm), it is around an inch (25 mm) shorter and an inch wider than its predecessor. In addition, the new Equinox features a wider front track for better ride and handling.
On the other hand, the interior of the new Chevrolet Equinox is gifted with amenities and storage that enhance its versatility and flexibility. For instance, it features an oversized glove box, a closed storage bin in the instrument panel, and another closed storage under the center armrest that could accommodate a laptop. Its interior comes with a "floating" center stack, accommodating several ergonomic comfort and convenience controls.
The interior is accentuated by an ice-blue ambient lighting illuminating the center stack, the center-console cupholders and the door pull cups. Meanwhile, the comfortable front and rear seats of the Equinox could be trimmed in either cloth or leather.
