GM working on a plug-in hybrid vehicle based on its Cadillac SRX

Article by Christian A., on December 17, 2010

According to the latest reports from Automotive News it appears that General Motors is quietly working on a plug-in hybrid vehicle based on its Cadillac SRX crossover.

This information came from two people with direct knowledge of the work, who also said that the new car will share some of the technology found on the 2011 Chevrolet Volt.

This means that General Motors will drop the costs of its emerging electric car offerings. Moreover, the new Cadillac plug-in means the relaunch of an abandoned project that GM had few years ago: to launch a rechargeable crossover vehicle wearing the Buick badge.

Furthermore, the new car will also become the first luxury electric car from the top U.S. automaker, after the plan to build the Converj concept car was dropped. Regarding these news, Cadillac spokesman Nick Twork declined to comment.

For those who don’t know, the current version of the SRX crossover was introduced back in 2008 at the Detroit Auto Show as a concept car and at that time GM said that the car could carry a fuel-cell and electric powertrain in the future.

With this new car GM is also planning to take on Toyota, which is currently the leader on the market. [via autonews - sub. required]
