Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2 is the official tyre for the 2012 Porsche 911 (991)

Article by Christian A., on January 3, 2012

Goodyear, the well-known tyre manufacturer, must be real proud as its award winning Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2 is the official tyre for the brand new 2012 Porsche 911 (991) Carrera 2. This means that one of the world’s leading sportscars will be fitted with the 235/40 ZR 19 (front) and 285/35 ZR 19 (rear) Goodyear tyres when first delivered to the customer.

One of the most important steps in buying a Porsche 911 is choosing the tires. When buying a Porsche for instance, its rear engine is structured in a way that it can provide exceptional traction. However this is only possible if the rear tires are able to transfer as much as 350 horsepower to the road.

A good choice for tires therefore would be the Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2 from Goodyear. The Goodyear brand has been known for its good quality and performance. The main consideration in manufacturing the Porsche 911 Carrera 2 was to give the experience of performance.

However another consideration was to have low emissions for CO2. This is where the Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2 comes in as it incorporates the FuelSaving Technology of Goodyear which can help in reducing CO2 emissions even further. The reason why this works is that the technology reduces the weight of the tire and together with the silica grade ‘high surface’, the rolling resistance of the tire is lowered and this reduces the heat generated as well.

The Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2, in addition, also has what is known as the ActiveBraking Technology. The tire tread has a 3-dimensional block inside that enables the tire to increase the contact with the asphalt during braking. Eduardo Garrido, Marketing Manager at Goodyear, shared that braking and control is a significant factor that many drivers demand from a sports car much like the Porsche 911.

This has long been shown to be provided by the Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2. It also has two new technologies that improve performance. The FuelSaving feature can help reduce fuel consumption while the ActiveBraking element allows shorter braking distances whether the road is dry or wet, Garrido concludes.

For those who don’t know, the 2012 Porsche 911 Carrera is powered by a 3.4-litre boxer engine delivering 350 hp (~ 257 kW) and can sprint from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 4.6 seconds when paired with the PDK, and in just 4.4 seconds when using the Sport Plus.

Porsche chooses award-winning Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2 tire for the new 911

Goodyear announces today that Porsche has chosen its award winning Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2 tire for the popular 19” wheel fitment on its Porsche 911 Carrera 2. That means that one of the world’s leading sportscars will be fitted with the 235/40 ZR 19 (front) and 285/35 ZR 19 (rear) Goodyear tires when first delivered to the customer. Goodyear’s Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2 was recently awarded the top score by the UK’s Auto Express.

Tire choice is extremely important on cars like the 911. The Porsche has a rear engine configuration which offers outstanding traction, but requires the ability of the rear tires transfer the 350 break horsepower to the tarmac to ensure the full performance of the car. Goodyear’s Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2 tire will meet this need thanks to its recognized solid performance and quality credentials.
The new Porsche 911 Carrera 2 was not only built for performance, but has also been designed to meet the increasingly low CO2 emission requirements. Goodyear’s FuelSaving Technology, also integrated into its Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2 tire will further support CO2 emission reductions. The technology is driven by reduced tire weight and a new ‘high surface’ silica grade that contributes to reduced heat generation (lowering the rolling resistance).

The Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2 also features the latest ActiveBraking Technology. Using innovative 3 dimensional block design within the tire tread, the tire’s contact with the road increases when braking.
“The control and braking performance of the Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2, demonstrated in both magazine other benchmarking tests, is a critical factor for the demanding drivers of sportscars such as the Porsche 911”, states Eduardo Garrido, Marketing Manager at Goodyear. “On top Goodyear’s FuelSaving Technology helps drivers reduce overall fuel consumption while ActiveBraking increases road contact during braking, thereby delivering significantly shorter braking distances on both dry and wet roads 1. ”

1. Compared to the average performance of three leading competitors. Braking distance on wet road from 80km/h to 20km/h, braking distance on dry road from 100km/h to 0km/h, measured by TÜV SÜD Automotive in December 2010; Tire Size: 255/40R19; Location: Mireval (FR) & Garching (GE); Report nr: 76244706-1.
