Hyundai U.S. sales increase 23 percent in October 2011

Hyundai Motor Co. reported its largest monthly gain in exports since the beginning of the year while the earthquake in Japan disrupted output at competing automakers. Specifically, the company's sales reached 364,809 units in October, 14 percent greater than what it achieved last year of the same month.

The figures were led by an 18 percent leap in overseas sales, the company disclosed. Hyundai's Kia Motors Corp. affiliate sold 212,348 units last month, an 11 percent increase from last year.

The South Korean vehicle manufacturers have expanded their U.S. market share while Honda Motor Co. and Toyota Motor Corp. restricted production due to the magnitude-9 earthquake and tsunami in Japan, which resulted to shortages of components supply and power source.

Kia and Hyundai stated on Tuesday that worldwide demand is increasing for "steady sellers," such as Kia's Forte compact and Hyundai's Elantra sedan. Offshore sales at Hyundai increased to 305,923 in the month, the fastest rise in nine months based on unadjusted October figures. On the other hand, domestic sales dropped 6 percent.

Kia exports leaped 15 percent in October, while domestic sales declined 4.3 percent. In September, Kia and Hyundai stated that they forecasted their combined sales in Europe to increase 12.4 percent this year, exceeding estimates despite economic problems in the region.

For this year, Hyundai intends to sell 405,000 vehicles in Europe, higher than the target it made earlier of 400,000, the company disclosed. Kia is expecting sales of 293,000, versus its previous goal of 285,000.

The all-new 2011 Hyundai Sonata was first unveiled to the North American market at the 2009 Los Angeles Auto Show. There, the popular Sonata midsize sedan series showed off the new Hyundai "Fluidic Sculpture" style philosophy and debuted its all-four cylinder range of versions.

The Sonata is Hyundai’s second vehicle after the all-new Tucson SUV in its 24/7 version 2.0 product initiative, signifying seven upcoming models in the next 24 months. Manufacturing for the Sonata will commence in December 2009 at Hyundai's U.S. plant in Alabama. Market deliveries are slated to start in January 2010.

With the 2011 Sonata, Hyundai sought to shake up the traditional midsize sedan category through the implementation of innovative four-cylinder engines, emotive styling and premium features to go with great value. As such, it seems to assert that:

1. A smart, practical sedan can have an elegant, contemporary and sleek design.

2. A taste of luxury shouldn’t cost too much.

3. An economical four-cylinder engine can produce V6 power.

FLUIDIC SCULPTURE DESIGN PHILOSOPHY

Around three and a half years ago, Hyundai’s designers began conceptualising about Fluidic Sculpture. This evolved to a fundamentally unified design philosophy which they initially expressed with the 2010 Tucson and 2011 Sonata. It is a stylistic language that will completely permeate the upcoming stable of new Hyundai vehicles.

The genesis of the Hyundai Sonata design came from the impression of the relationship between the fluid and the natural with the solid and the structural, resulting in an image of perpetual movement. With nature as inspiration, Fluidic Sculpture infuses dynamism and elegance in a vehicle’s silhouette and lines. This is now the very heart of Hyundai’s aesthetic philosophy going forward.
