If the tentative labor pact between Ford and the UAW is ratified, then the production of a supercharged 5.8-liter V-8 would be a sure thing. Under the deal, Ford will retool one of its engine plants to build this engine. However, the UAW deal doesn’t indicate if the engine will be used on a Ford or a Lincoln. Many speculate that it will be first used on the 2013 Mustang Shelby GT500.
The current 2012 GT500 model is a very impressive machine, with a supercharged, 550-hp, 5.4-liter V-8 engine that delivers 510 pounds-feet of torque.
The 2013 model will definitely be better though, says Autonews. Ford hasn’t given the details but it’s believed that the 2012 Camaro ZL1 provides hints of what the Mustang will feature. The latest Camaro ZL1 is set to go on sale in early 2012. It is powered by a supercharged 580-hp, 6.2-liter V-8 with 556 pounds-feet of torque.
The legendary Ford Mustang will soon be able to deliver extreme driving delight for anyone, from regular drivers to track racers, with its new version called the Shelby GT500. Powered by a 662hp engine, it promises a maximum track speed exceeding 200 mph.
Herman Salenbauch, Director of Advanced Product Creation proclaims that the SVT maintains the Shelby GT500’s technological pole position and further advances muscle car capabilities to new levels. Salenbauch adds that they paid attention to every automotive performance aspect, including the 0-60 mph time, the maximum speed, racetrack times and quarter-mile times. At the same time, they made sure that regular drivers will discover that this car is a perfect fit for their needs.
The Shelby GT500’s 5.8-liter V8 aluminium-block engine’s 662 horsepower output and 631 lb.-ft. of torque surpass the power of all other North American-made engines. Just about every component of the powertrain – from the new supercharger, new cross-drilled block and heads, all-forged engine rotating assembly, improved camshaft profiles and updated head gaskets, to the enhanced carbon fibre driveshaft and enhanced clutch, transmission and axle – has been properly configured in order to maximize power output.
The new supercharger is now larger and permits greater airflow through the engine. Its enhanced efficiency is a major factor for the engine’s outstanding 662 horsepower output. Distinctively, the 5.8-litre engine features a new Twin Vortices Series 2300 blower that achieves a displacement of 2.3 litres.
The new engine’s cooling system has also been completely improved. The new cooling fan has greater capacity, and its fan shroud features high-speed pressure-relief doors. Also, the charge air cooler has greater efficiency, the intercooler pump has higher flow, and the intercooler heat exchanger has 36 percent more volume. Working synchronously, these components ensure consistent heat management even under extreme conditions.
The new supercharger now has four lobes with a 160-degree twist and its drive ratio spins it 2.64 times quicker compared to the previous version. Additionally, the inlet air volume is greater by 33 percent. Boost is now at 14psi, up from 9psi.
