Infiniti beefing up quality control by adding more female inspectors

Article by Christian Andrei, on August 27, 2010

Nissan is looking at adding more female inspectors as one of its strategies to improve quality control at the flagship Infiniti factory, for its redesigned M sedan, which arrives next spring in the US.

The company would like to take advantage of women's better attention to detail. Included in the carmaker's plans are to have new laser measuring devices and to provide better instructions for line workers.

Mikio Aoki, general manager of quality at Nissan's Tochigi plant, said that the company has been making "drastic changes in terms of quality assurance."

The Tochigi plant builds several Infiniti models including the M. Aoki said that Nissan aims to build more robustness into the manufacturing process.

Aoki said some quality checkpoints that used to have human inspectors have been replaced with machines that can pinpoint problems more consistently. Nissan also plans to install lasers that can measure whether the gaps between the door and body are up to specifications.

Previously, checks had measured only the seal on the outside but now, the interior seal is being checked as well. During a press tour of the factory this month, Aoki said that Nissan is looking at the cost-benefit point. For instance, the Fuga that goes on sale later this month has been given new quality measures for its luxury sedan's redesign.

The Fuga is also known as the Infiniti M in the US. A hybrid version of the Infiniti M is due stateside in spring 2011. Nissan put in place a more advanced paint-check system that assesses the body's color consistency when viewed from different angles.

This was done to ensure the perception of even color, especially on the M's more curvy body panels and fenders. Incidentally, Nissan has added more power to the final inspection this year. [via autonews]
