Infiniti IPL G Cabrio planning to take on high-performance German cars

How the crowd at the Paris Auto Show responds to the IPL G Cabrio Concept at the Paris auto show will determine if Infiniti will be able to compete with Audi's S, BMW's M and Mercedes-Benz's AMG models in Europe. Infiniti unveiled the IPL G Coupe, the first production model in its IPL (short for Infiniti Performance Line) range, in the US in August.

This model begins selling in the US this December. The IPL G Cabrio Concept is powered by a 3.7-liter V-6 engine with 338 hp, an 18hp boost over the standard G Cabrio. The additional power stems from a high-flow dual exhaust system that enables the car to hit a top speed of 270kph and accelerate from a standstill to 100kph in less than 6 seconds.

The concept's maximum torque is boosted to 374 newton meters from 360 newton meters and its sports suspension includes recalibrated dampers and springs that are 10% stiffer than those on the regular G Cabrio. The exterior features on this sleek, strong concept include sculptured side sill extensions and bigger wheels that emphasize its stance.

Infiniti has finally disclosed its Infiniti Performance Line (IPL) specialty-performance vehicle collection, offering customers a chance to enjoy a new level of premium performance. IPL redefines total vehicle performance by enhancing power and acceleration, but also by offering driving attributes and designs distinct from other Infiniti models in each selected Infiniti line.

Infiniti Performance Line vehicles are aimed at customers who are looking for luxury vehicles that do not only personify luxury but also take on the individual styles of its owners. With limited availability, all IPL vehicles still feature Infiniti's emotional design and iconic Japanese craftsmanship, but boast of higher levels of luxury and performance thanks to changes made to their exterior and interior as well as engine tuning and suspension.

According to Infiniti Vice President Ben Poore, IPL was conceived to deliver a level of premium performance -- Infiniti's Inspired Performance -- that could not be achieved just by upgrading the vehicle. He remarked that IPL merges all possible elements to come up with the perfect formula for unparalleled driving experience – remarkable styling that’s harmonized, excellent performance and acceleration, comfortable ride and confident handling.

All IPL models are identifiable through a special engine cover as well as trunk lid badging. They all also feature the unique IPL emblem – the letter "I" donning a red insert representing sporty spirit and an Infiniti-violet "shadow" lurking behind it.

The first of the IPL vehicles will include the 2011 Infiniti Performance Line G Coupe that boasts of 384 hp of power. The IPL G Coupe will have its debut at an exclusive event during the 60th annual Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance and will be available for the purchasing public starting December 2010. It will be followed by a series of IPL performance vehicles in the near future.
