Infiniti JX crossover announced for Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance

Infiniti announced today he JX Crossover, a new all-new three-row luxury crossover set to hit the dealerships in 2012 as a 2013 model. Previewed by an exterior sketch, the new car continues the firm’s styling theme seen on the Essence Concept. The bad news is that the new Infiniti JX Crossover will not be shown at this week’s 2011 New York Auto Show as the concept form will be shown at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance this August, while the production version will make its word debut by the end of the year at the 2011 Los Angeles Auto Show in November.

“The all-new Infiniti JX crossover will allow us to continue to expand the Infiniti brand’s presence in the Americas,” said Carlos Tavares, chairman, Nissan Americas. “In 2010, Infiniti was one of the fastest-growing luxury brands in the United States, and this year we will expand our presence further to Mexico and Panama, followed by Chile in the first half of 2012.”

Apparently, the Infiniti JX was created as a 7-passenger antidote to the ho-hum luxury crossovers that are out there and the car promises to offer a stunning interior, easy access to the roomy third row, plus the latest in-vehicle technology such as next-generation telematics.

Infiniti showed the public a prototype for a 7-passenger, 3-row luxury crossover at the 2011 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. Designated as the JX Concept, it represents a line that will become part of the Infiniti stable in spring 2012. Shiro Nakamura, Senior Vice President and Chief Creative Officer first introduced the concept crossover at the Lodge at Pebble Beach, just before the weekend.

Nakamura states that the JX Concept is an advancement of Infiniti’s design ethic and adapts style characteristics from the Infiniti Essence concept to make it more appropriate for a high-end family crossover. This is seen in the more aggressive design of its headlamps and front grille, the arc-shaped D-pillar and the greenhouse body shape. Overall, the JX Concept offers a more powerful look compared to the ho-hum design of most three-row crossovers.

Apart from the impressive external design, the Infiniti JX Concept was engineered to be outstanding in three key areas for the luxury crossover segment: (1) interior adaptability and spaciousness; (2) advanced features for convenience; and (3) safety.

Infiniti Americas Vice President Ben Poore explained that they are taking advantage of the fact that the three-row luxury crossover segment is showing rapid growth compared to other premium vehicle segments. Their entry comes with the company’s customary intention to “shake up the status quo” by introducing a vehicle that they confidently predict will set new standards for design, comfort, spaciousness, advanced telematics and safety.

The production version of the Infiniti JX will have a cabin that’s more spacious than current luxury crossovers. The second seat row can be tilted and adjusted forward to make the third row much more accessible.

Poore elucidated the vehicle’s flexibility and accessibility when he said that you can leave a child seat attached to a 2nd row seat while moving into or out from the 3rd row. Additionally, this 3rd row “isn’t the typical penalty box,” as its space is enough for adult passengers and can even be expanded due to the 5-1/2 inch forward/backward adjustability of the 2nd row.

Infiniti’s practice of introducing new automotive technologies continues in their development of the JX. Their Blind Spot Intervention system now has a Backup Collision Intervention integrated. This assists the driver when the vehicle is in reverse by warning about crossing objects behind, and even activating the brakes automatically if a collision is anticipated.

Naturally, new high-tech, efficient and intuitive features will also make their way into the Infiniti JX. These include a 14-speaker Bose Studio Surround sound system with Waveguide bass technology and a cutting-edge Infiniti Connection Telematics system that is able to synch the owner's calendar and assist in navigating to appointments. The Infiniti Personal Assistant will also be featured in this luxury crossover. This is a new personal electronic concierge that includes 24-hour live professional assistance, and will actually be offered as a standard on all Infiniti vehicles from 2012 onwards.
