A premium taxi on the race track? Most people may never have even dreamed about it but the men and women at Jaguar just achieved that with the Jaguar Nürburgring taxi. Based on the all-aluminum long wheelbase XJ Supersport fitted with Sport and Speed Pack options, the 'Nürburgring taxi' is the latest member of Jaguar’s fleet at its Nürburgring Nordschleife engineering test center.
It is powered by a 5.0-liter supercharged V8 engine – something people don’t expect in a taxi – that develops 510PS and pushes the taxi to a top speed of 174mph, sans the fare meter. In terms of styling, the Jaguar Nürburgring taxi comes with the non-standard matt grey paint finish with exterior Sport Pack.
Thanks to the Speed Pack, the vehicle’s electronically limited top speed surged from 155mph to 174mph. Nevertheless, the Jaguar Nürburgring taxi remains spacious enough to seat four people. Jaguar needed to implement some changes within the Nürburgring taxi to make sure that its occupants are utterly secured and safe when the vehicle makes its rounds.
Thus, gone are some of the Jaguar XJ cabin comforts like the standard leather-trimmed heated and cooled seats. Instead, the cabin gets four race seats, each equipped with four-point harnesses. For further safety, the Jaguar Nürburgring taxi is fitted with a full bespoke roll cage.
According to Frank Klaas, Global Head of Communications at Jaguar Land Rover, the carmaker has been running a Nürburgring driving program from its Nordschleife engineering test center for some time. He noted that the center would be the best place to demonstrate the dynamic abilities of the current Jaguar XF, XJ and XK models.
Klass remarked that among the current models, the XJ Supersport has been surprising journalists with its speed -- simply due to the fact that the vehicle has been regarded to be just a large luxury car. However, the Jaguar XJ is simply a large premium car that can run fast on track, thanks to its aluminum architecture that has rendered it rigid and lightweight.
